Thinking of selling my e90 330d msport and getting one of the above. Be gutted to sell mine but with a 1 year old and another baby due any day we just need a car with a bigger boot. Part of me wants to keep mine as it really is in great nick but you should see the size of these double buggy contraptions. Is the e91 a lot bigger boot wise? Is the e60 that much bigger and has anyone gone from an e90 to e60? Think I want to stick with a six pot oil burner so has to be 30d/35d. Opinions please. Looking to spend around 12k which should get me a decent mileage 07-08 plate of either

E91 has same size boot floor to load cover space (though does not taper off at the back and the boot floor is a bit flatter.

However, it is far more versatile as it has glass only hatch, full hatch, the cover moves for higher stacking, folding seats etc... means you can cram it full very easily and without breaking your back, plus the larger opening will make getting a buggy in much easier.

I went from an E60 to an E91!
Nothing particularly to do with the boot though - I just wanted a smaller more "chuckable" car.

The 530d is a very capable car indeed. The boot is huge, but has a relatively narrow opening, so it may take some stacking. The E91 boot isn't very big, but of course you can stack it to the roof. At least with the E60, you can put a spare wheel under the boot floor - or one of the children if they're naughty
You could probably get more kit into an E60 boot than an E91 if you're taking the buggy - a double buggy may net even fit inside an E91 boot, as they are quite narrow. Try and get a Sport E60, as the SE seats aren't as good as a 3 series over a long distance. Manual's do tend to be cheaper as the perception is that 5er's should be Auto. Most of the 5er's available will be 520's, with the 4 pot, which is relatively harsh compared to the six. The later E60 525's are 3 litre sixes too, so don't discount them.

You absolutely MUST throw away the RFT's on an E60, they just were not designed to run RFT's, and proper tyres will transform the car - otherwise the ride will be harsh and it will tramline awfully.

Then of course there is the E61, which is enormous, inside and out - and you can get them in M5 flavour - ideal child taxi!!!

My mate has an E60 and he has no problem fitting in his nieces pushchair and car seat in the boot with enough space left over for groceries and such.

I have an e91 and a 5 Month old boy.

We easily get his pushchair, seat section, rain covers, plus his change bag and a weekend bag for me and the good lady with space.

As mentioned above, the physical floor space is the same but it is flat and alot easier to get things in and out.

For comparison, my good lady has a e90 lci so i am fully aware what fits in both cars in question.

Needless to say, when we go away for the weekend with sprog, we use the e91 and not the e90!

On the e60 front the boot is big and the opening is larger and much easier to get things in than the e90, however, it still is a saloon thus if trying to stack items ontop of things, becomes much harder.

Cheers for the replies it gives me something to ponder. If I went e60 did they change much on the lci models ie does the 530 get the newer engine which they put in the 330/25d lci models. Noticed they seem to have led back lights and different gearstick but can't say I noticed much else

Biggest change is newer ZF gear box, much better economy, around 20-25% better, if economy matters, which I guess it does if looking at dirty diesels?


E91 boot is rubbish, we struggled hence we go rid and bought an E Class, I just wanted to be able to lift the tailgate and throw everything in it, in the E91 I was having to plan it like a puzzle to get it all in, and often used the back seat as well.

Also the E60 LCI has a nicer interior and better materials used on the dash

E91 isn't that big inside. Go all the way and get an E61!

I came from a Megane R26 to an E91. I would say there was as much space in the Megane.

I decided I did not really need the space as 1 child coming to the end of pushchair phase but also looked at a Octavia VRS Estate.

Massive Boot for the size of car.

If I had 2 kids I would have got one of these.

Not a massive fan on the e61. Seem a bit of an ugly duckling IMO but would be massively practical

How do you find your e class compared to e90/60. Don't really know a lot about mercs as in which one to buy and what specs they come with etc. Got about £12-13k depending on what I get for mine. What would I get for my money?

The VRS come with the last gen direct injection Golf GTI engine so just over 200 bhp. Should remap to 250 bhp. Still be good for 40mpg on a run.

I drove one when I had my mapped R26 with 260bhp as my current car and the salesman said fast isn't it (as its the fastest car the sold). Did not have the heart to tell him.

Be ok with the remap.

The boot is cavernous I recon a match for E61. So deep not being rwd.

I used to get 27mpg out of a MK5 Golf GTI, you would have to drive like Mary Whitehouse to get anywhere near 40mpg
