BMW Performance Exhaust loses power ?

At least that's what they say in this article...and it appears to be well documented:

Looks like it. What's to enhance in the first place? It's just the mufflers for sound fx.

Interesting article. I can understand the poor reading after install but after quite a few miles with a marginal increase is simply weird!!!

Wow man. What a rip!
It makes me wonder about the 335 performance exhaust.

Doesn't it depend on what your ordering for though? Doesn't the E90 get the complete system (cat back exhaust), vs the E92 & E93 only get the axle back system... or am I mixing these up? I know one of them gets only the axle back and one of them gets the cat back...

Does one really expect to get a performance gain with just an axle back system, it's not like your changing the way the exhaust flows out (albeit a minor change in flow)... YOu still have the bottlenecks in the rest of the system that wasn't changed...

From the article pictures, the 135i has a resonator which is replaced by an Y-pipe, so the 135i exhaust is not just axle-back like the e92 in order to fuel such concerns. And even so, it loses power.

Weak test. The only way to get a reliable comparison measure is to reinstall the stock exhaust and redyno. Ideally swap back and forth several times. Car rags suck at experimental design.

one thing that concerns me is that they quickly posted the lower numbers and dyno charts -- but they did not re-post the "adapted" numbers -- just that they were "the same" ....

if i can count how many times ive bought stuff cuz the tech editor said it was the "hot set-up" id be a millionaire...

im not discounting their fairness or credibility -- but come on -- post the "after adapting" dyno chart to close the case on this.

but then again since they didnt -- who knows ?

I think they posted the highest numbers, and after adaptation things didn't improve so they chose to publish the pre-adaptation numbers (my opinion).

I would sure like to see those numbers.. cause i have this exhaust on my car.. maybe its a placebo effect, but there is a definite difference in peformance from my car compared to the stock set up -- i ran the stock exhaust for that very reason.. but without a accelerometer or a dyno, i just guessing.

ive had a couple of people that drive the same type of car (335i E92) take it for a spin, and all have come back saying the same thing -- the bottom end is a lot stronger than theirs, and the turbos spool a little quicker. -- but then it could just be the sound of the exhaust.

just as a note -- BMW didnt post some wild numbers on performance gain, and 5-6 hp is hard to feel with a butt dyno. -- it was a tad soggy after the installation.. but its much better after some warp speed runs on the highway.. so im pretty much satisfied at this point

Well, anyone installing an axle-back or even cat-back exhaust and looking for any real power gain (ESPECIALLY on an untune car) is simply dillusional. A full DP back replacement and new DPs are the only way you can see a real gain from exhaust. The rest is really for costmetics and a great sound, which obviously there's nothing wrong with that. Total speculation, but I'd guess that the BMW Perf Exh sees 5-8 hp gains with a tune over stock exhaust, given that there's a lot more air flow going...but still, the main restrictions are the cats and DPs, of course.

no axle-back is going to add significant power.... the fact that the piping diameter is the same, muffler seems pretty similar, kind of hints that the only real difference in sound is coming from the removal of that resonator....

After seeing this test, I have reason to believe that the "performance muffler" is simply a gimmick, and that anyone could achieve the same sound by removing the resonator that the bmw perf. exhaust eliminates...

Not a surprising test at all. I doubt the car lost power, 3whp is negligable.

Sounds like the gain/loss is within a margin of error...

The claim that you can feel 3-5 hp in the "pants" on a car that's making 300+ hp already is laughable.
