Considering a dash cam.

After a run in with a a-hole high school kid, im seriously considering getting a dash cam. The kid tried to throw a pen at my car on the highway and luckily missed from the wind. Not to mention I was cruising in the right lane doing like 2 over and he just comes flying by, slows down to my speed and I saw them fumbling around in the car trying to get something. I knew what they were up to so I hit the brakes right before they threw it. I saw them out of the corner of my eye trying to get my attention by leaning out of the window before and I just ignored them. I got their plate number, but then again I don't have any evidence. What are some good dash cams that are available?

I have not actually bought one yet. Still modding my car and hoping the wife doesn't get hit again.

Well it can cause a scratch that I need like a whole in the head. What damage can a coin do? Dent a panel and break a windshield. A metal pen will do even more damage than a coin will.

What if the OP's window was open? That can be quite the distracting to have something FLY into your windows at highway speeds, not to mention dangerous.
I don't think I have to explain the rest.

depends on how fast you're going. but it can scratch your paint and if at the right speed and angle, can pierce your windshield and go through your head... take your pick.

Okay okay fellas... I guess I didn't take into account the whole velocity kinetic energy thing. Besides I was thinking of one of those cheapo plastic Bic pens anyhow

Now that I think of it, I'm sure anything anyone throws at me on the road will be pretty bad being a convertible guy

I know somebody that had D batteries thrown back at them from a crotch rocket- that was some nasty shit.

Pittasoft DR500GW-HD is the one I have. Before I had a Finevu CR-300HD but the internal battery kept dying because the heat was killing it. It was a pain in the butt to replace the battery. Not sure if the Finevu CR-500HD solved it.

The DR500GW-HD is good but not the best. The wifi feature is pretty cool but it overall lacks the speed to stream uncompressed videos without buffering every 5 seconds or so. Live view is cool but video is fuzzy. Night videos are mediocre. After the heat issues with the older DR400-HD, they decreased the bit rate of the videos to prevent heat issue, sacrificing clarity. However there's modified firmware you can put to increase the bit rate for a clearer video. The mount it comes with is silver. A lot of people used plastidip to black it out along with the lens.

You can find a comparison chart here: http://dashcamtalk.com/

Also make sure you buy a UPS like powermagic for surveillance when the engine is off.

Just about to pull the trigger on the newest BlackVue. It's only a matter of time in LA before someone does something stupid to my car. Including me (we can erase that one)!

Go for it man, the price of a dashcam is nothing compared to the money you will be paying for your insurance deductible or out of your own pockets let alone all the headache you will have trying to dispute a case.

I would recommend the CR500 HD, it uses 1/3 of the power compared to other cams (i.e. blackvues) required to run the unit (meaning parking mode will last 3x as long) and shoots in full HD. Not to mention the same GPS, G-sensor, parking mode, sony lens you would expect in a high-end dashcam.

Hope this helps

That dashcam link is quite interesting.

I've been lucky so far, but you never know when someone decides to lie their ass off and try to blame you for something they did.....
Price of that unit: $335.00
The look on that dillhole's face when caught red-handed in their lie: priceless!

I'm toying with the idea of getting it.

Classic. He/she probably did something to threaten the riders' life. Nothing wakes up a cager like a D cell to the windshield.

Definitely get the Blackvue. Lots of guys try and use the Gopro but it doesn't work very well for that application, especially at night. Blackvue has loop recording too, so you can just let it run continuously until something happens, then pull the footage you need off it.

I was checking out the blackbox FineVu and was curious if there was a way to hardwire it without using the power kit. I'd like it to operate like a radar detector (on and off w the car) and it doesnt seem like you can if you use the power kit (will always be recording when parked unless you turn the unit off each time).

I use my old deactivated Droid X phone/with the excellent Droid x mount- and the android app "dailyroads voyager" Runs in a continuous loop and automatically records the past 2 minutes when it senses a bump/accident, or by screen touch.

Surprised someone would do this in a concealed carry state; regardless of how old they are. My recommendation is skip the dash cam and purchase a glock.
