Why don't they just increase the minimum age to get job seekers allowance to age 18 or something. Harsh perhaps .

18 is the minimum age. It used to be 16 (I believe) but now the argument is that you get paid to go to 6th form if you are poor so there is no excuse to sit on your *rse. Remember that a lot of these 6th form courses are vocational where people learn real practical skills which hopefully lead to employment without going to Uni.

£30 is a pittance and it means that the govenment doesn't have to pay jobseekers allowance to 16 and 17 year olds unless they are estranged from their family.

So it's swings and roundabouts. Either we pay for them to be in college or we pay for them to sit at home watching Jermey Kyle.
or we pick them up at 7 every morning give them a broom or a shovel and make them work for their handouts AND they get practical work experience as a bonus

Good luck with that! Have you ever tried to get teenagers out of bed never mind clean their bedroom?

Also a nation of street cleaners will never get us our empire back. National Service might work though. Sh*t that's what old people say

Yup.

And we would be making things.

And selling them abroad.

And have an economy.

Does anyone remember when we used to do that?

Wow, you guys really do have it hard in Europe.

20% VAT + high personal income and property taxes?

How do you survive?

The United Kingdom actually!

We've got nothing to do with what Johny Foreigner does in Europe.

Traditionally (some of us) haven't minded high(ish) taxes as the state has provided for our needs (Health, Education, Unemployment) It's like insurance without the thieving middle man and big corporations.

It could be worse we could live in Australia where they apparently get sod all back.
