20"s on an e90, YAY OR NAY????
hey guys,
currently looking to get some new shoes for the car, came across a nice set over the weekend, the wheel specs were 20 x 9 with +40 offset at the fronts, and 20 x 10 with +20 offset on the rears, they shop owner mentioned they were suitable for a e46 m3. however had no clue if it would fit on my car and advised me to double check elsewhere. wondering if you guys would know if it will clear everything under the guards or not? and what tyre size would be reccomended to get these babies to fit? i used the measurement tool on this forum, however i have no idea how much space i got to play with under the guards towards the inside. any help would be much appreciated. regards, will |

I prefer 19's nine out of ten times. They seem to be the best combination of looks and performance IMO. 20's are HEAVY.

Yes. And why put 245 tire on a 10" wide rim? I guess 245/30/20, not even sure that fit a 10" wide rim.

20x10 +20 will fit fine with a 265/25/20 ... its the same set up as running BBS CHs in M3 fitment ... you will have to roll your fenders which isnt a big deal at all yet a lot of people on here cry about it all the time. Since this is an agressive fitment coilovers are best suited for this.

19's are better in every way. (18's are even better for ride quality) The ONLY reason to go with 20" wheels, is for the "look at me aspect". They ride worse, have clearance issues, cost more, and are harder to sell later on. It's clearly not a decision that is made with your head, it's a decision that is made with your heart.
Hey, you have the right to buy whatever the hell you want. Just don't put it as a toss up question. It ain't that close a call to be perfectly honest here. Buying 20" rims for this car is wrong in every conceivable way except for the bragging rights and the huge wheel look it provides. The End.

245/30 will ride harsher even if the rim was 9.0 inches wide. Makes no sense. Buy wheels and tires that fit the car properly. I see people modifying their car to fit a set of wheels. That's just crazy man. I don't want/need anybody's wheels that damn bad. You guy's are tripping. Make the wheel company's build the damn wheels in the right offset and widths and you won't have these problems. People just accept this crap. That's the real problem. What a joke...

Dude its all about style ... I for one think standard fitment = boring
"Flush" set ups rock ... 99% of the peoples cars on this forum will never see a track day in their life. On the streets big tires are not that much more of a help ... you'll never get them to proper operating temp on the street to get the benefit of the grip. If you think im full of it ask any who tracks if they get their tires up to the right temps on the street (if they do they are driving like crazy people and will most likely end up in jail and their lic suspended). So in that case why not go for style? If im going to build a track car for one its not going to be a BMW as there are so many more platforms for less $$$ that will dominate (Evo, STI, Elise, Ect). With all that said fitment is all ones personal taste ... stretched tires, with some poke giving it the true Euro look ...I think its hot! ... its even cooler to me if you see it here in the states as everyone is so hung up on being "safe" and sticking with the standard gunmetal and black face rims. |

The superficial reasons for buying 20" wheels aside, the assertions you make are quite disturbing. I would assume that you are still a young man that does not fully grasp anything beyond 'skin deep beauty'. Safety is not a passing fancy. It's should one of, if not the first thing that comes into play when making a decision about a particular tire/wheel combo. FAT (or is it PHAT?) tires and rims that serve no purpose are a waste of money. (and fuel since they are larger & heavier) If you don't have any additional power enhancements (like a supercharger system) that combo is also dangerous. You are right about one thing... More rubber means a slower warm up time to get the proper grip across the entire contact patch. Without the proper uniform heat in the tire itself, it's more of a liability than anything else. Combine that with inexperienced and or immature young guy's who want to show off or have this invincibility complex and you have the seeds of a disaster. Turning OFF the traction control is a prime example. (especially if there are any girls in the general area) People often make the INCORRECT assumption that more rubber = more grip. Nothing could be further from the truth. Large heavy wheels, with large wide tires are a detriment to you and your car. That's not my opinion, that's a fact. Bling wheels are made for show purposes only. Unless you have substantial power upgrades to justify this move, it's all about being 'seen'. Otherwise you are just lugging around extra weight, adding more stress to your suspension, and paying for more gas as these boat anchors are not exactly easy to get rolling. If you are buying a set of huge bling wheels for show purposes only, then fine, that's another story. I understand the 'draw' of that look. I can also appreciate how some people are attracted to that look. Personally, if I had a show car, and I was trying to win a trophy, I would probably buy a set of bling wheels myself. But as a daily driven street car, not a chance in hell.

I am going 20's also! So just do it if you like it.
Not sure of the offsets...but sounds like rolling your fenders will need to be done. Which is really no big deal. Show us pics once you are done. I will be as soon as the wheels are ready.

For sure you have to roll the fender, but I think et20 too aggressive.
I have 20" on my car, 20x8.5 et32 (235/30/20) and 20x10 et37 (275/30/20). No rub at all, even sit with 5 people and I don't roll my fender. Dropped with H&R Sport on the pic. |
