I was 10.4 city driving on Shell 95

I was 9.4 city driving on Shell V Power 98 (9.6% less fuel used)

I am now running BP Ultimate 98 - see if it's any different

I drive a 6MT 320i second only to 320d in 3er economy stakes

The cost increase is largely offset by the fuel economy

I dunno how accurate the gauge is but yep

I haven't really checked it as such but I always give it a few squirts in 1st and 2nd once oil temp is >90 degrees every time I drive it, so its not as if im driving for economy!

I've tried extended runs (i.e. 6-8 weeks) on Caltex Vortex Diesel and BP Ultimate Diesel. To be honest I don't find a big difference. My driving style is not focussed on economy (in manual shift 90% of the time) but the biggest factor I've found is traffic. Over the school holidays my fuel economy improved by 10%.

I have always been using BP Ultimate Diesel in the past few year and only have just recently started trying Caltex Vortex Diesel. I found on my 330d, the BP is bit more responsive/jumpy where as the Caltex is more calm/smooth but only very slightly.

BP is more only slightly more efficient in my 330d in range. This is also the case in my wifes Audi V8 diesel where it is significantly more efficient with BP.

Ahhh... that explains why I'm now doing BP Ultimate and I've getting the same milage with the same driving as Shell 95. First week back to school. Cripes. I'm bored with econo testing.

I feel like such a tight ass. Ah the perils of buying a E93 while at uni. I basically use 91 then every few weeks fill up with 98. I have just a plain e93 325i automatic. I currently get 10.4L/100km according to ze computer - do I honestly need 95 or 98? its only base engine, not tt or m3

I believe with better fuel = cleaner engine? the difference in fuel consumption is negligible i think.

Okay a few people on this thread harped on about consumption, I thought that was the basis

Not being a smart ass at all. Doesn't manufacturer recommend premium? The car will run on 91/E10 however it will not be at optimum performance or using the full potential of the engine. The ECUs are smart and recognise the type of fuel used so it you are using a lower grade fuel then the car is automatically putting limits on engine factors (eg timing/knock resistance). As a result performance will be reduced and excessive knocking will result in engine damage. If you can't afford 98 then at least go for 95. At the end of the day its just a few dollars difference in the total fuel bill. If you shop around for fuel or wait for the cheap days then you can easily negate the difference in price between filling up on 91 on an expensive day or 98 on a cheap day..

fwiw australia section of e90post gets heaps of trolls and a question like yours just seems to have an obvious answer for anyone that puts fuel in to a BMW. Hence I wasn't sure if you were serious or not. It really shits me that this thread has reached 4 pages already for something so trivial.

Actually the fuel cap/manual with my E93 and the stealership I asked (although I dont take them serious) specifically states anything 91 or over fuel only. Which means by definition 91 is fine, everyone here is going on about 98 98, I saw quite a few of those people have 335i or above so I figured maybe it was just for those cars. I never put E10, only 91. My local BP doesn't sell E10 thankfully

91 is safe, but not necessarily ideal. I think the fuel cap in my C63 also says min. 91 however it is meant to run on 98. The min. XX rating is just the minimum safe level. So say you run out of fuel in a desert while driving across australia and the closest servo only has 91.. it means you CAN run 91 in it but not ideally. Even a 325i will benefit from it (the engine will) however you personally may not feel the effects of it.

ps - please dont think im being a tool. I'm just saying that for the sake of (literally) a few dollars (that can easily be saved elsewhere in someone's daily spending) you can ensure better well being for your cars motor.

I use 98 in a 335i and have since changed from Vortex to BP Ultimate. It does seem to run smooth. As for waiting for the cheap days, the servo's don't often discount 98 by more than 1 or 2 cents. the discounts are on E10 and regular. Have to use the shop dockets to get a deal....and BP don't run these. Only Shell and Caltex....

AFAIK the Australian standards require that cars must be able to run on RON 91 however since the early 2000s the standard for fuel consumption changed - it is now based on using RON 95 (i.e. premium) in line with European fuel consumption tests.

Here see Merc one also says Min.91. But suggested is 98. I also checked in the E90 and it said Min.91 (range 91-98) but the main rating suggestion is 95.
