Took the 335D to Road Atlanta for a 2-day HPDE. Car is surprisingly quick. I was able to keep 335i, 135i, E36/E46 M3s in the rear view mirror through turns and on straights. If they were pushing it hard, I'm sure some of them could have taken me.

The newer M3s were able to take me no matter what (braking, corners, straights) just as you would expect.

Overall the car suprised me with how well it performed and suprised many people in my run group. The car was also a major hit in the paddock with everyone asking, "Is that thing seriously a diesel?! I had no idea!"

Oh and I averaged 26.4 mpg this weekend not bad for 4 hrs of commuting to/from ATL plus 4 hrs of track time over 2 days.

Gary, is this with DP and tune? I know you were getting DP from banished one but unsure if that was all finished.

That's because you have a nicely refined tune.

I just did the JR/Bohl route and ported the wastegate as well as the EGR bypass. under normal driving I do not smoke at all and there is no real audible difference, when I accelerate hard 85-90% throttle it rolls coal up to about 90MPH.

Not yet. Completely stock still. I'm pretty sure if I had the DP and Tune, I would have been seeing the traction control light come on much more than I already did coming out of turns.

Soon!

If smoke is the most important aspect for you then yeah an JBD should "help".

I would also expect that you would put bus lengths on e36/e46 m3s that arent pretty well tuned if you had dpf delete and tune.

You still need to stop and turn. While our diesels are fast, slowing and turning does not seem to be in their wheel house.

Of course. However the e36 and e46 are dated machines at this point. Stock 335d posts better skidpad numbers than both of those and only a couple feet worse braking 70-0, so at stock levels all three cars should be fairly comparable on the track as Gary seems to have found. If you stick together through the corners, a dpf delete and tune 335d would pull bus lengths in the straights on those cars if stock, particularly the e36 which is just plain slow by 2015 standards. That was all I was saying.

The fact that the 335D can keep up with a good number of performance cars and has a timeless exterior makes me smile

For me - its the before 'Mexico' conversations, and then the after 'Mexico' conversations with people who have just been GAPTIZED but had also talked down on a fuel sipping 3,800 lb, 4 door diesel sedan.

More than once - I've heard, 'DAMN! That's a diesel....Jesus!'

This is why I now have a tag that reads....DZLJEZUS

I completely obliterated an Audi s6 driving through the middle of central California in the middle of nowhere. I got the car up over 150 mph. And basically toyed with the s6 (it was an older one) I have never raced with anyone besides that. But, it was defiantly one of those VERY rare moments where I actually felt good about all the time and money put into my car.
