Thanks for the response.
Here is what I was referring to. I call it "soft paint". You see it used a lot in Audis and BMWs. You can scratch it easily with your nails.

It depends on how long the "gunk" has been left on there... but if it is all above surface dirt and contamination, it is a relatively simple process.

You will need a good wheel cleaner, some brushes, and perhaps a tar remover.

These Vossen wheels were pulled off a 2008 CLS63 AMG. They had quite a bit of dirt and grime build up on the barrels.

Sonax Wheel Cleaner Plus was sprayed liberally onto the entire wheel (maybe some Iron X too, I can't completely remember this one) and allowed to dwell for several minutes (do not allow to dry!). I then agitated the cleaner with a wheel brush, and rinsed the barrels. This removed 95% of the crud. A tar remover was used to treat the remaining particles, and they were also clayed with some "junky" clay that I leave laying around for wheels.

The wheels were then coated with CQuartz DLUX for protection.

Wheel barrels and faces can also be polished if needed. We use a 3" polisher and 1" polisher for this task.

I haven't done a paint correction in years and I'm looking to tackle the swirls on my Space Gray E90. I've heard that people are using microfibre pads nowadays? Would these work well with M105 and M205 for medium-minor swirl removal?

For light defect removal, I would stick to foam polishing pads or foam light cutting pads.

Microfiber cutting pads are excellent for heavier compounding, but would likely be overkill for removing light swirl marks.

Zach, what is good for chrome tailpipes? Have the black buildup mostly around the bottom part, bit dots on other areas too.

Thanks.

In my article about CSL I mention....
Quote:
Application was very straight forward. Just add a small amount of product onto the supplied applicator pad and spread a thin, even layer onto your working area. I found it best to split panels into sections, working in relatively small areas (i.e. half of a door or a quarter of a hood). Once you have spread the product onto a section, immediately wipe it away using light pressure and a clean microfiber towel. Reapply product to your applicator as needed, and repeat this process of spreading the coating, then removing the residue until the entire car has been covered. Remember to flip to a clean portion of your towel regularly, and change towels when needed. Inspect your results as you work to ensure you are completely removing the coating residue as it will be very difficult to remove if left to cure. I find it best to inspect for coating residue with bright, but diffuse ambient light. Spot lights/ swirl inspection lights are not the proper tool in this case. If you have a shady area, or are working on a cloudy day, move the vehicle outside to inspect it for any high spots that need to be taken care of right away. More detailed instructions are available here.

Initial Impressions: Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light (CSL) by Zach McGovern

You may apply EXO as soon as you have applied CSL to the entire car. When you are applying EXO, follow the same order that you applied CSL.

Let me know if you've got any other questions.

Good morning Zach,

Gtechniq PW Panel Wipe or Carpro Eraser to remove Polishes before applying CSL coating? I have Eraser in my detailing arsenal, do I really need to buy Gtechniq PW Panel Wipe?

GTechniq says to use Panel Wipe because they say it is a stronger solvent.... but we have gallons of Eraser sitting around, so I have been using Eraser for a year with CSL and have had no issues.

If you are certain that you removed all of the vomit from the carpets, then you could use an odor eliminator to help remove any lingering odor.

Meguiar's Whole Car Re-Fresher Odor Eliminator Mist
Chemical Guys Sofast Odor Eater
CarPro So2 Pure Odor Eliminator

However, if there is anything left in the carpets, the smell will likely return.

How can I remove/mask polish/compound thats stuck in tiny rock chips? I've tried alcohol/q-tips/microfiber but some wont budge.
Would something like black light/black wax help?

My cars paint is monaco blue, so its pretty dark (almost black). Thing is I dont want to spend hours everytime this happens. Normally I'd clean and touch it up, but thats means I am spending almost 2 days wrapping up my detail regiment.

Are you sure it is compound/polish/wax residue and not simply exposed primer?

If you're certain it is residue, then you can even use a tooth pick to pick at it within the rock chip.

We've never had a difficult time with this as most of the residue wipes right up with a microfiber towel.

Zach, just fitted polished black chrome tailpipe tips. Can I still use a metal polish or should I just try soap?

Zach, what product do you recommend to recondition door seals? I noticed the top part of my door seals are a lot harder than the bottom on my e92.

If the tips are in good shape (ie new) then there is no need to use metal polish. Just keep them clean by regularly wiping them down during maintenance washes (which should be done every 1-2 weeks).

If they are used and have heavy carbon build up, you can use a metal polish.

The only product I know of for seals is Nextzett Gummi Pflege Stift Rubber Care Stick
. If they are particularly dirty, you can clean them thoroughly with an all purpose cleaner on a microfiber towel, and then condition it with the Gummi Pflege Stick.
