u can get lots of discounts on cartier watches...they only have the name...just like Mercedes...the engineering is just average but the name is big.

haha...u must not know what you're talking about. Rolexes have a legal amount of discounts. Any more than 5% discount is against the contract and they will therefore void your distribution rights. As for Cartier, it's for people that doesnt know jack about watches and just wants the brand. lol..why do you think Prada joint ventures with IWC. (think of sunglasses....you know that Gucci/LV/Prada sunglasses are not about quality...but more of the name and the fashion sense unlike Oakleys where they spend lots of budget into R&D) To put it in simplier context, it's like BMW and Mini. Cartier watches are like Mini where the engine is a join venture between GM and BMW (now it's another company and BMW, forgot which one)..and Rolex is like BMW. I love Mini Coopers...dont get me wrong but it's just a car that is fun to drive but nothing about engineering... I know because one of my family's business is in jewlery and luxury watches. Just FYI, rolex is just a BMW....the names that you haven't even heard of...are the true Rolls Royce/Lambos of watches...Frank Muller is just one of them...i've seen watches that easily sell for 1mil. (though i'd rather buy lots of lambos and M5/M6s.) lol..this reminds me of our last discussion about financial tools and research...it seems like you dont even do research...

Uuhhh... right. Any respectable watch owner knows Rolexes don't keep time for crap. People buy Rolexes to show people that they own a Rolex. People buy BMWs because of their performance. Rolexes don't perform, because they don't keep time! Rolexes are the product of great marketing and bling factor. They've lost their mystique. Kind of like LV purses. They were originally known for their leather, but because of their mass marketing and super-saturation, their quality has decreased.
Financial tools? You never responded to anything I said. How's your portfolio performing right now? |

lol you responded? i didnt get the updates on my subscriptions. lol how's your clients doing? i made about 30% since i last posted on that topic. lol...no crap about 18.xx% please. these brochure language is just to lure clients to trust them with their hard earned money. as i said...i like to manage my own money...well at least most of it. In truth, NOBODY can predict the future. there are formulas and whatever tools you were talking about, but at the end of the day, it's all luck, capital, and fast reaction. you and i know that.

It's Franck Muller btw.
Most if not all mechanical watches need cleaning and lubricating every 3-5 years, but still keep time. Rolexes are notorious to be off a couple minutes every month. Maybe to you this is "keeping time," but comparitively, that's pretty bad. You brought up the BMW analogy, I just made it fit. I bought my BMW mainly because of the way it drives, not for they way it looks (although it is great in that category also). And where did I say BMW was the best? I never said someone can predict the market. Frankly, it's about asset allocation, a very basic concept taught early on in the finance world. More than 99% of all individual investors will NOT have the resources available to research enough products to properly allocate their assets. It's not about return, although historical return has become a performance benchmark. The rich want to protect their assets consistently, in the down and up market, and beat inflation and taxes. You can have a 300% or 30% return, it doesn't matter. What matters is the historical consistent return, which you have NOT mentioned. Anyway, it seems regardless of our opinions, we can agree to disagree. I will enjoy my Cartiers, my PP, and my Jaeger, and you can enjoy your Rolex. You may never buy a Cartier, and that's fine with me. I will never buy a Rolex, and I hope that's fine with you. Obviously we have something in common in that we both bought and enjoy our BMWs. Hopefully we can find some respect and admiration in that. This conversation, however, is steering far off topic from the OP's, who wanted to know what kind of watch would be nice around the $1000-$1500 price range. My first $1,000+ watch was a TAG, and I love that watch to death. Still have it, and it runs well. Most $1,000 ish TAGs (and watches in general) will be Quartz, however. That is not necessarily a bad thing, but the collectible value on them are not as high. Any suggestions around the given price range e90fanatic? |

The cool thing i love about Rolex is that you can scratch it up and they can buff it off for you. So far I've only seen Rolex that are able to do it. Anyways...hope you find a good watch. Other options around 1k-1.5k is Seiko, Omega, Bell & Ross, Breitling, Citizen, Mont Blanc, and my personal favorite, Tissot oh dont forget, you can bargain on watches, just like cars

That's a sweet watch. I wish I could get myself to spend that kind of money but I can't do it right now. If/when I do, that's the watch I'll be looking at. Tissot is a great affordable option which is the direction I'm going. Same company as Omega without the name or pricetag. Tissot watches still have swiss movement and sapphire crystal. It will have to do for now. |

off topic but i think its the italian navy, and also because panerais are on the bigger side, if you have a smaller wrist i don't think it would look good, small wrist + 44mm watch=no good IMHO
