Car in for service - any guesses what the issue might be?

No warning/service lights on
Strong soot smell through the vents and around the car. SA said "This stinks, i can't believe you didn't bring it in sooner!". I drove for about 100 miles after the initial symptoms, before I noticed the wistle sounds. I thought DPF was regenerating.
Wistling sound under throttle, not neccessarily WOT either.

Ideas?

BTW, car was in for service about 2 weeks prior for service engine soon light and they replaced an injector.

Yes. The smell was out of the vents correct? The 3 series is prone to them failing and the smell is terrible. Just trying to think out of the box

Not sure if you guys missed it but it was a crack in the #9 pipe. Exhaust back pressure was reading fault. Not sure why there were no codes thrown...
