It's true and I think it is stated in the manual about leaving your key fob in the trunk/car

Ok, i'll be honest and that I did not read every post in here so I am not sure anyone list this yet. I am sure it has been discussed in the forum before. But I want to list it here.

When I drive, I like to turn on the music on my logic 7 system up a bit (to drown out the crackling interior noise ). I stopped by the gas station and turn off the engine. Get back into the car and start the engine again. The music level has turned back to a minimum level. I dont think this feature was available in my e46.

Actually, I think you are slightly mistaken. I just came back from the Performance Driving school this weekend.

Pressing it quickly disables traction control, but stability control stays on. you will see the DTC light on your dash.
Pressing it and holding it will disable traction and stability and put a little hazard icon on your guages.

I learned the hard way on the skid pad.

There is that volume/drive sensitive setting where the faster you go, the volume adjusts accordingly automatically, and also when you slow down it goes down to the starting volume it was set at. IIRC you can't even turn it off, you can only keep it at the lowest setting.

Not sure if that's the same thing you're referring to since you mentioned shutting down then restarting, but if not then hey this is another feature

Well as we got quite a bit of Snow here now , let me say that you've got it a little backwards.

DSC = Dynamic Stability Control --> Works to keep your car stable

When DSC is On (Default - No light in dashboard), DTC is also on, as it's a part of DSC. DSC uses many sensors and very computing to keep your car on the indented trajectory:
  • ABS
  • DTC
  • Throttle Control
  • Yaw Angle
  • Steering wheel angle
  • CBC (Cornering Brake Control)

I tested it Driving on a snow covered wide space (little bit icy under snow), and did a quick turn @ 45Km/h, DCS intervened and cut throttle (even as I was pressing harder) braked some of the wheels and kept the car going where I was pointing it.

In other words, when DSC kicks in, you are no longer really controlling all the inputs besides steering or if you decide to completely get off throttle and slam brakes.

DSC is all about Stability!

**************************************************

DTC = Dynamic Traction Control --> Work to keep your drivewheels from spinning out of control

When you do a quick press of the DTC button; (DTC light in dashboard),the car is basically warning you that only DTC is on. DTC works manly with ABS to keep your drive wheels from spinning out of control.

I tested it Driving on that same snow covered wide space (little bit icy under snow), and did a quick turn @ 45Km/h, The rear of the car went out and I had to counter steer to bring it back where I wanted & DSC kicked in as I gave more gas and kept the wheels spinning while limiting spin.

In other words, when DTC kicks you are controlling all the inputs, it will not factor in anything for you besides limiting drive wheels spin (not an LSD) to give you a certain level of TRACTION.

What that made me realize is that it's nice to be a good driver and control you car, but If I did the same thing on the road with only DTC on... the ass of the car would have either, clipped a curb, guard rail or a car next to me.

******************************************
LAST:
If you keep the button pressed for a little longer ... then you are on your own with the Beast.

Again I tried my little test with all of it off. I can tell you that, with the amount of torque in the car the wheels in snow or ice (even with very little throttle), the engine revved and the wheels spun and spun and spun ... no Traction.

I would recommend this mode either on track or on nice warm day at limited speeds.

Gosh, this "how do I turn on/off DTC/DSC" discussion has raged on in many threads in the past. Driving home yesterday I had to turn my DTC on (single press of button, light comes on in dash) due to very snowy conditions.

Yeah, mine doesn't do that (although I have CA). I don't think that's a "feature" on our cars, but maybe a glitch on that poster's car. Why would they do that, anyway? What is the benefit to that?

Be careful with the 1st paragraph. The start/stop button WILL shut off the engine while you're driving if you hold the button in for a few seconds.

I totally agree with the 2nd paragraph.
Even some with more expensive cars are envious. My detail guy said, "I really love your car" the other day. He drives a 650Ci.

Not true. If you push the unlock button on the dash twice, you can then pull the inside handle and open the door.
Is this true? All a thief has to do is break a window and press the unlock button twice and all the doors and trunk unlock?

Why doesn't the driver side mirror angle down when you put it in reverse? Or am I missing something???

I really like the feature but could use the same feature on the left side rear view mirror.

I was confused about DTC and DSC as well.

Here is a repost from a couple weeks ago....

Here is what is says,

"DTC is a version of DSC in which the drive output is optimized for particular road conditions, e.g. unplowed snow covered roads. The system assures the maximal drive output, but with reduced driving stability. It is therfore necessary to drive with appropriate caution."

What the manual is not so clearly saying is, if you start the car up and floor it, the computer will apply brakes and reduce power output when it detects wheel spin. When you push the button thus illuminating the DSC light, your wheels will spin if you loose traction on a hard launch.
Just to make sure of this, I went out this rainy afternoon and tested it. The car without the DTC illuminated prevents the wheels from spinning on a launch. When you "Activate" DTC by pushing the button and illuminating the DTC light in the instrument panel, the wheel will in fact break loose on a launch. This may seem backwards logic, but it is actually just "BMW logic"

Hope this helps put the is it on or off debate to rest.

-With CA, car will only let you open the door you are closest to, so if you are at the drivers door, and someone places their hand in the passenger door, it wont open.
-Leaving your keys inside the car and trying to close the door with finger on door handle wont work, car is stopping you from being an idiot and locking yourself out.
-With CA, if you are trying to open the trunk, press the trunk button on the underside next to your license plate and then move your palm (immedietly after pressing) closer to the BMW emblem. This will cause it to open faster. Well, it does for me, thats my story and I'm sticking with it.

-Stupid North American people cannot be trusted to hold the lock button on the key fob to close windows/sunroof/mirror as can be done with CA by holding finger on lock position.

-The cruise control system actually applies your brakes and turns on brake lights if you are going downhill or lower your CC speed setting.

Only works on the right side. I guess they assume you can always open your door and look down
