One thing you could try in the interim is tossing some BG244 (http://www.bgprod.com/products/products.html) in the tank, run the car until very hot, toss some BG109 in the crankcase & let it sit at 2k rpm for 10 (recommended by BG) to 20 (recommended by diesel forum goers) minutes, change oil &filter, continue driving on your tank of 244 and see if your problems improve at all. I've always been semi skeptical about these types of products, but BG does make some good stuff and your in the perfect situation to try it out. The worst that could happen is that you still need carbon cleaning afterwards. PS, when PR was talking about removing the foam, I think he meant something like this: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=797822. I doubt this will help you, but just for reference. |

Curry's, @Speed, and two other small shops will not touch a diesel. 335I direct injection and 135i (same engine, so obviously) have had similar issues and are getting cleaning done for well under a grand (usually under 500).
I feel like I am really getting screwed here at 57k miles... |

@Jhayd11, where are you located? Do you do any of your own work?
HAVE YOU TRIED PMing @Clem? In case you want to give additives a shot, I had an Exxon in Gaithersburg order 109 and 244. PM me if you want the details. If you grab an oil change kit from Tischer, you'll be good to go. It's worth a shot on a last ditch effort (although I'm doubtful if its bad enough to put you into limp). Id reset the codes before starting the process. Put the 244 in the tank and Just make sure the engine is HOT when you pour the 109 into the crankcase and let it run at 2krpm for maybe 15 or so minutes. Do you have a rough idle or anything that could indicate improvement? You could occasionally drop it down from 2k to see if it smoothed out. After that, do an oil change immediately. As long as youre comfortable knowing you can get it back together, You could also pull the manifold yourself and see how cleaning it works out (what's the worst that could happen)? |

if you actually have carbon buildup as the problem and its causing limp mode, no amount of additives or oil changes will fix it. You have to get it cleaned up. $5,500 is an outrageous price though, for that amount you could find an indi who isnt super busy to tear down the top end and clean it out with a dental pick and toothbrushes. I would think a real shop could do it in a day, two if its their first time. Two days labor and $750 for a manifold (assuming they cant/wont clean it) should get you out for under $3k and IMO two full days is a day and a couple hours too long for "professionals" to do this. A brand new cylinder head online goes for under $2500 so for $5500 you better be getting a completely brand new top end

Options
1) DIY 2) Push off a cliff 3) ??? I think most of us will have to deal with this issue at some point in the future if we decide to keep the car. I for one would like to keep it... hopefully a solution can be found. |

The "best" solution will be to remove all the pollution control/EGR stuff, install a custom exhaust, water/meth system and get the computer properly flashed to support that.
With proper, normal maintenance, the engine would probably run trouble-free practically forever like that. |

From someone with a perfectly running and driving 2002 (thats model year 2002, not a BMW 2002) that wont pass CA smog AND a 335D, I wholeheartedly agree with this statement

Called BG, I need to see if the Diesel Injection and Fuel/Air Induction service can both be ran on the 335D. Haven't heard back yet.
Car drove this morning, no SES no limp mode... Wish I could find a performance shop to take care of this... running out of time. |
