Losing oil

After having the car checked over and the OFHG replaced I thought my woes were over.

Seems I was wrong and I am still losing oil. Approx. 500mls since the OFHG was replaced. Any ideas? How fast do these things burn oil? The gauge is at half.

Thing is I don't seem to be leaving much oil anywhere. My oil tray has a very small amount of oil on it.
I can't see any oil around the head or down the side of the engine.

I did a 300km drive on the weekend and the gauge didn't move.

Have you had the VCG (valve cover gasket) done as yet? No other hoses leaking that might only leak under pressure ? PCV and hoses in good shape ?

BMWise said the gasket was fine.
It's been 3 days now and the oil level has not dropped any further. Confused

Maybe you have a problem with the oil level sensor?

Well I know mine's got an intermittent problem and it may be the same with others too. After a cold start if it sits facing a slight downhill for a less than a minute the low oil warning comes on. Restart the car and let it warm up and suddenly the oil level shows full and proper.

Be interesting to measure the volume that comes out when you change it. I've heard of the odd sensor going but they're not a cheap part to replace I believe!! Turbo motors will burn oil if driven hard especially with the N54's poor PCV system. Were you giving it a hard time?

When my turbo seals were gone, i used about 1l every 2k to 2.5k, after getting this fixed (Mr Socket's stock set when he went aftermarket lol), my consumption went down to 1/4l to 1/2l every 10k.

How do you know if the turbo seals are gone?

I recently had the car checked over. Was told there was some weepage but nothing significant. I leave no real pools of oil any where.
I might put it into DS occassionally but not often.

I did notice smoke on colder mornings. I don't think it's lacking power.

Oil level is sitting just about Min level. It's been about a month since last refill. It does not drop daily. It might go 3 or 4 days before I see a drop in level and I check it daily.
Am thinking I need to return to BMWise and get the sensor checked. Would not be good to top it up and over fill it.

Oddly before I had the OFHG replaced it was similar in oil use. Maybe that OHFG leak was not the big issue.

Drain and measure the oil?
Have you inspected the oil cooler for punctures or leaky fittings?

My first step would be to drain and measure the oil, then refill with 6.5L fresh oil. Then drain and measure again once the level indicates 1L required. Use the same measuring jug for the old and new oil to rule out measuring equipment variances.

I'll see if I can do this on he weekend. It was just done when I took it to BMWise.
The oil level seems to sit in one place for quiet a while. It's now been at 1/4 for the last couple weeks. I know it's weeping oil from some where but it's not leaving pools of oil

Ok I have put a litre in and marked the date. Let's see how long it takes to need another litre

The oil level sensor isn't super accurate or sensitive so it will really only report relatively dramatic changes in oil level. Similarly the older TPMS behaves the same way - it will only report dramatic changes, not smaller progressive changes.

Yes and no. it won't show perfect incremental changes to oil level, but it will show macro movements. Still can't beat a dip stick though.

It's been over a a tank since my last oil top up and the gauge has not moved as yet.
I have been driving very sedately lately thinking maybe it's burning quicker when I use DS

1 month of "normal" driving and the oil gauge is still showing full.

I usually drive hard (live in rural SA), I have to top up a 1ltr of oil every 1,500 to 2,000km. The oil is changed every 6,000km.
