I bought the car with the TC defective and my understanding from the previous owner is that the TC stopped working around 170k km which is just above 100k miles. No iol changes on this TC.
I might find that needle bearing at transmission parts shop somewhere but do you know if it's exactly the same as the other side bearing? I can give it a try if that's the case.
unless you're going to get the bearing surfaces re-machined (on the gear and the spreaders), replacing just the bearing will result in an even more premature failure since the surface is so rough now.
As for the cause of failure, who knows. yeah they all would see the same load, but with different sizes, speeds, and materials they could all have very different failure limits.

eager to see how this pans out and how much you end up spending on parts/machining. there may be some hope yet for me to rebuild my old one.

i already spoke with an european company that rebuild transfer case and they confirm that both roller bearings are the same...they cost 21 euro each so if that can fix a 2000usd transfer case should be a great deal

This is what cobra replied when I asked them to confirm the bearing link you sent me is the one we need:

"Hello,

That bearing is the one that goes on the drum. The one for the sprocket assembly are only avaible in the sprocket assembly right now, sorry.

Thank you,

John"

Yep, that's exactly what I don't know either. I guess we will figure it out when we get there. First let's find the bearing we need. I hope frenchi is right. I will double check today and see if they look the same. Can you compare the two too?

Sorry guys, life and weather got in the way.
We got -20-25C for a week now. It's not tempting to do anything outside or in the garage.

Sorry ucdbiendog, my bad. I was under the impression what frenchi was referring to is that the needle bearing from inside the clutch assembly is the same size as the one on the outside of the clutch and actually the one in the cobra link. I just checked them today the the one in the clutch assembly is bigger bearing than the one outside.
What's interesting is that I don't see a bearing case on the outside bearing but the one inside the clutch assembly has a case as the one in the cobra link.

I was going to give it a try but if the bearing was the same with the one we need cobra should have said so.
Frenchi, is there a chance you can find out more from your connection in Europe about this bearing?

Any update on this? I had the same needle bearing failure in my 07 328xi at 164k miles. There are 2 of the exact same needle bearings in that clutch assembly but I have had no luck finding it either.

Found the bearing. Came in today. Exact fit and looks like it is the same company that made the original. This is the one that is inside the clutch pack. There are 2 of them on either side of the clutch arms.

interesting. the 8.5 dynamic load capability seems low, but i have no idea what the engagement force is for the clutch pack

It is the exact same manufacturer that made it originally. There are 2 of those exact same needed bearings in that clutch pack. One on either side of the clutch arms. Side by side comparison they are exactly the same. That is how I got the dimensions for it.

Praying this is not the issue I'm currently having.

What were the symptoms you guys were having? Which lights appeared on the dash etc?

My 2007 328xi started coming up with 4x4, ABS and brake light past week and I hear noises under the car when I shut it down sometimes. Upon shut down the lights disappear but about 5-10 min into the drive they reappear again.

No engine codes but setting up BMW Diagnostic tool soon to find out deeper codes (hopefully).

What codes were you guys getting?

same lights. subject line has the actual code. if you take off the actuator motor you can put your finger in the t-case (after you drain fluid) to see if the clutch arm gear is engaged. that was how my mechanic was able to diagnose bad t-case and not actuator.

Were they constant or went on after a while?

You replaced the entire Transfer case? :/

If this end sup being my issue I'm thinking about just leaving it RWD. The only issue is lack of ABS? Is there a way to engage it with disengaged transfer case?

I just can't justify fixing transfer case/making such an investment on such an old and questionable car right now.....

Curious if there is any harm doing this long term...
