Windshield wiper 'chatter' video included - POLL ADDED

Took car in SEVERAL times for this issue. Was told that my arms and such are working just fine. Its the blade itself, BMW blades dont work well apparently. BMW said all they would do is put new blades on, however, this is about the 4th set of blades that have done this. My SA suggested aftermarket blades. I would like to get some aftermarket blades, preferably good ones, like the bosch Icon blades but I cannot decipher if they will fit on my car.

Can someone tell me what sizes or what blades to get for the car? Car is a 2008 E92. I hate, hate hate hate this noise. Turn you volume up a bit, its damn annoying. With some lubrication the noise goes away but that requires me to use the washer fluid all the time. Hope no one else has this issue, because it sucks

I'm currently using the Rain-x Latitude blades.
Actually makes driving in the rain a bit more enjoyable.
However, using these blades you do lose the ability of using the OEM wiper cover.

I could honestly care less about cover or such. What sizes do I need? Is it 24" for driver and 18" passenger? I just want the damn sound gone. BMW told me the blades they use are BMW. They said no solution to them except put new blades on, which we have, 4 times. So now its time to get my own blades. Such a crap noise. Just need to know the size. I cant seem to find that info.

What windshield washer solution are you using?
Back when I had my E36, I would experience chatters with non-brand name window washer fluid. Ever since then, I've been using Prestone WWF and no longer had this chatter issue.

As for sizes, I think it's (24" driver) 19" but I could be wrong.

Its a non name brand, but that shouldnt matter. Its no different then what BMW uses, just some blue stuff.

No, Ive washed the car with so much stuff that will strip sealant off it should removed any rain-x that could have been on there.

Can someone confirm the sizes so I can order some new blades?

I clean my blades with Goo Gone about once a month and they are silent and streak free even after a year. When I get new ones, I clean them right away and it's amazing how much black comes off of brand new rubber.

I'd try the $3.00 fix before I spent lots of $ on new blades

I couldnt find it, but did. Its 24" and 17.5". Auto part store didnt have any that would fit though, or confirmed that they would fit anyways.

So will bosch icon blades fit the car? As long as its 24" and 18" for the coupe they will fit on there somehow right? Goddamn BMW didnt make this simple old hook and ladder system.

Will try this. They feel nice and smoth and not dry and worn out at all though.

Amazon doesnt say it will fit a Coupe, it says sedans. So 24 and 18" in Icon will fit no matter the icon because of the system? Someone want to confirm if it will or not? With the sale, $24 shipped I dont care, I want the sound GONE. What blade DOES or doesnt fit. BMW cant respond because they arent OEM.

I found a few threads that said Bosch may make the wipers for the car oem so I've got some rain x latitudes that will fit in 24 and 18 coming from amazon. That way if the noise still happens after I put them on and down the road then I know it's something other then the blades.

Still disappointed BMW told me its normal and it happens to the wipers. Not very good BMW. But whatever. Hopefully this takes care of the problem.

Just going back to physics, forgetting that it's a BMW, isn't the cause of chatter the amount of pressure being put on the blade? i.e. if you gently push down on the blade with your finger, the chatter goes away?

BMW service truly is stupid at times. If you guys have another brand of car besides BMW, you'd be surprised how you're treated in the svc. dept. It's very refreshing to tell you the truth.

This chatter pisses me off too. I wait until I can't see anymore than manually hit the on off so I only have to listen to it once.

Hey guys, I was able to solve 95% of my chatter problem.

It's not your windshield that's the problem (though it helps), its the blades themselves, atleast it was for me. I didn't have to replace the blades though.

Take a rag, dampen it a bit and start rubbing at your blades, your rag is going to get a nice black streak on it. Keep rubbing and change positions on the towel to a clean area once in a while. Keep doing this until it is not leaving much of a streak anymore. Voila your blades should not squeak most of the time.

My blades are around 4 years old and only squeak when they first get wet.

Lol, my only disclaimer is that it worked for me but I can't guarantee it'll work for you. I also sealed my windshield with sealant.

I thank you and the others that suggested this. I will do this once the new blades need it. Im really curious to see if the new blades will do it or not. I think its pretty sad that BMW cant give a better answer, other then just putting new ones on. With the amt of people having the problems, I would think they would have done something different by now. As it seems, quite a few people seem to have this problem.

copy this from bimmerfest for "BMW Tech" person & it worked for me after I showed this to my dealership:

Typically, wiper inserts lasts up to a year before they begin to streak/skip/and chatter across the windshield when used. Your problem appears to be abnormal, therefore I would suggest visiting your local dealer to perform the procedure I am about to post with illustrations. It may appear to be over engineered or simply ridiculous, I agree that a pair of channel locks or regular pliers and a watchful eye could do the job. Precision is key, hence the use of these special tools. The end result is therefore effective if done correctly. Guesstimation versus precision, guess which one proves to be precise by definition. Skills or experience of the technician following the procedure won't matter much. If one can see, read (alpa-numeric/english language/sesame street contents), walk upright, with 2 hands/eyes/and not a zombie....your chances of getting this fixed........90 precent.
The 10 percent goes towards the possibility of you ending up with a brand new windshield because the tool fell on top of it or something of that nature.
Follow along with the picture and see for yourself.
----Wiping quality is increased if the approach angle of the windscreen wiper arms is precisely adjusted.

Pic 1
-----Adjusting dimensions of wiper arms:
Reference points (A,B) are the mountings of the wiper blades on the wiper arms to the sealing lip (1) of the cowl panel.
Contact angle (C) is the angle between wiper blade centre plane (2) and windscreen.

Pic 2
------Remove wiper blade (1) from wiper arm (2).
Pin (3) is locator for special tool.

Pic 3
-------Slide special tool 61 6 100 onto pin (1).
Place special tool 61 6 100 on windscreen (2) and read off value in degrees on scale.
Note:
LHD vehicles are covered by the scale range of 0 to -10

Pic 4
-----If the specified number in degrees is not correct, the wiper arm (1) must be bent with the special tool 61 6 110 at the point shown.

and this:

Refer to attached pic for the referenced information

A/B = Distance between windscreen wiper blade (2) and trim panel on cowl panel (1)
Note: Measurement is taken at the height of the locators (3) for the windscreen wiper arms
C= Contact angle between wiper blade centre plane and windscreen

When adjusting with special tool 61 6 100, set the scale value in accordance with the following table.
For RHD cars, change the preceding sign of the scale values.
• LHD cars, scale range 0 to -10
• RHD cars, scale range 0 to +10

Contact angle (C) on windscreen wiper arm for E90/91/92/93
86.7 degrees on the passengers side
86 degrees on the drivers side
---plus or minus 1 degree on both so I would probably place it dead on at 86 degrees

Scale value (LHD) on special tool
-3 (negative/minus) on the passengers side
-4 (negative/minus) on the drivers side

Adjustment dimension (A , B) on windscreen wiper arm
88 degrees for passengers side on E90 and E91
75 degrees for passengers side on E92 and E93
----plus or minus 3 degrees

95 degrees for the drivers side on E90/91
84 degrees for the drivers side on E92/93
----plus or minus 3 degrees
