DIY Roller Sun Blind for rear window - Retrofit

DIY Roller Sun Blind for rear window

Retrofit Kit 51 40 0 398 487 for e90
Retrofit Kit 51 40 0 419 046 for e92

Remove the following components:

1-Rear seat. Easy, just pull right and left front ends. No screws, no tools require. If you don’t have winter package remove rear backrest seat.
2-Side section of backrest. Easy, just pull from the top. No screws, no tools require. TIS 52 26 008
3-Roof pillar trim panel, rear left and right. One screw under “airbag” covers, move up and pull. Take door trim out just where it covers the pillar. Tedious, medium difficulty, be very careful not to break the clips. TIS 51 43 251
4-Mid- range loud speaker. Only for logic 7. Do not remove left and right speakers.
5-Top Tether eyelets for child seat. LACTH. Easy after you located the screws.
6-Lower seat belt anchor screw. Very easy.
7-Rear window shelf. Take all the front clips out (only car with winter package). Disconnect speaker’s wires L and R. Take seat belts out of the rear window shelf. Very easy. TIS 51 46 001
8-Using the measures on the instruction that comes with the kit drill the holes on the rear shelf. Difficult. Be very careful. Double check any measurement before drilling. Screw the blind and brackets to the rear shelf. Center the blind.
9-Mount the rear shelf. Remove the foam from the top where the brackets seat. Screw the bracket to the metal shelf from the truck. If your holes are correct, the brackets will match with the holes on the metal shelf in the car.
10-Reassemble pillar trim, rear seat, seat belts, etc.
11-Remove the cover of the third or auxiliary stop light. Easy, just pull from the rear end. Using the measure on the instruction that comes with the kit drill the holes on the cover. Screw female bracket. Reassemble cover.

It took me about 90 minutes to install my blind. If you don’t fell comfortable making measurements and drilling your car, don’t do it yourself. The most difficult moments where: removing the pillar covers and all the measure – drilling process.
TIS references are for a E90. I don’t have the TIS software for E90 but I have it for E60. I used all the E60 instruction they are very similar to the E90.

If anyone around Raleigh, NC want to install their blind, I can help in person.

My next work will be retrofitting the logic7. I'll install speakers under the front seats and a subwoofer under the dash. Any one interest on doing or helping me on this???

Great DIY, I am going to tackle it. Do you have a better part number for the E90. The one you listed brings up nothing. Thanks

I think the blind he installed is a manual one and not the power version.

Yeap, I installed the manual blind. To install the electric one would be about the same work. The manual kit cost about $ 160, the electric blind will cost about $ 500 plus a new rear window shelf and switch.

I think this looks great, but I prefer to just get the windows tinted since I also like the privacy all around.

But I did live in CA and the tint also helped keep the car somewhat cool in the sun all around as well. Now that I'm in Seattle, I may soon re-think having a rear blind and consider this option.

Just finished installing the Roller Blind Sonshade; It took me 3 hours 15 minutes. I took my time cuase I did not want to break anything. I must say that I am satisfied with my work. This retrofit really adds to the luxury and signature of the car.
Thanks to you all on this thread for submitting very helpful pictures to assist in the installation. I did not use the TIS software.

Thanks ESTELLER for your great pics. It has helped me dramatically.
I think having done this DIY I can now tackle the cloth to leather seat cover retrofit.
I will let you all know when I install the leather interior.

wouldn't you be better off just going to a custom interior shop and having them redone? I know a friend who had custom leather done on a honda accord a few years back and it cost him like 1800 for the whole interior and it was two tone adn they did the door panels.

I dunno thats the way I would go.

Just ask the dealer you bought from to fax you the installation instructions; that's what I did.
I have a fax copy of the instructions but it is not very clear.
