6MT Gear Shutter
I couldn't get an appointment until next week at BMW so I was curious if anyone on here has experienced this.
I've got an 09 328xi 6MT with about 38,000 on it. I drive about 1,000 miles a wk, and until now the car has been fantastic. Today while engaging first gear, I experienced a shutter/vibration as the clutch was fully released. I thought nothing of it, but it kept doing it all day. It is doing something similar as I downshift into 2nd gear. I don't do burnouts or do anything crazy with the car, so I am baffled as to whats going on with the transmission. Anyone have any ideas? |

I did some searching and read some posts that the clutch is covered and some that the clutch isn't. Like I said, the car hasn't been beaten by any stretch of the imagination, so should I expect BMW to cover this?
CPO with balance of original factory warranty. |

If you're still within the original warranty the clutch will be covered under full maintenance.

I have the same thing. I took the car in, told me nothing was wrong with it and they charged me $120 bucks. I even rode with the tech, pointed out the feeling, and he told me it was road noise. Its fucking annoying, thats what it is. But if it makes you feel any better, its been doing it for 10,000 miles now and hasn't gotten worse.

I have had the same problem with my 128i since it was new. Sometimes it is so bad that it will shake the whole car. It seems to do it more often when the car is cold or damp. I have not been able to demonstrate it to the dealer so they ignore the problem.

So the shutter you feel is a result of the CDV (clutch delay valve) and the dual mass flywheel. Under certain conditions letting out the clutch (rapidly at first) will activate the CDV and get the dual mass flywheel out of sync causing it to vibrate (opposite of what it is supposed to do). I don't know why it happens; maybe the tension springs start to oscillate. My car had this problem. I finally decided to try removing the CDV to see if it helped. It did. Remove the CDV and the problem will go away.

So the case of the shutter has finally been explained....
I went home to NJ for the weekend and while downshifting from 6th to 3rd to make a turn (Was going about 45 mph) the clutch blew. I laid about 15 feet of rubber in the turning lane and the car seized. I tried to restart the car and engage a gear but the clutch would not let me engage any gear. So the cops helped me push the car out of traffic and the car was towed to BMW Roxbury. Next day: BMW Rox calls me and tells me the clutch blew apart and it would cost $1800. They told me that the clutch is NOT covered under any warranty because they are not sure what caused it to fail I call the dealer in PA I got it from and tell them the situation. I had the car for 3 weeks and had an appointment for the shudder. I explained that I was not new to 6mt.... I learned on an e46 m3, and had driven manual transmissions for years. Long story short, they tell me that they can't guarantee that they will warranty the work but they will pay to drop me off a loaner in PA, pick up my car and take it back to their shop in PA I call BMW Rox and they tell me it will cost 200 to put the car back together to have my dealer tow it. I call my dealer (Thompson BMW) and they agree to cover Rox's cost and we arrange the pickup/drop off. Rox calls me 20 minutes later and says they will cover the clutch under normal wear and tear and that I can pick it up the next day. Well I picked up the car and they assured me that there was no damage to the transmission and that the previous owner must have beaten the car before I took ownership. I pick up my car 48 hours after the incident and the clutch feels amazing. It was like having a brand new car. I am very happy I didn't simply secumb to the costs and fought my way to covered work. |
