DIY Ram Air Scoops
Wanted to give back for all the useful info I've found on this site. I decied to make my own ram air scoops that go behind the grills and now i want to share.
I searched for ideas and found a couple of good ones but wanted to do something faster, cheaper, and simlpe. I decided to mount the scoops to the snorkle and avoid drilling any extra holes. I wanted it to be easy to instal and remove if need be. You dont even need to remove the grills, just the two torx srews and the two plastic rivets. The air deflector comes in two peices. I cut off the magnets that mount itself to an A/C vent and trimed off the sliding tabs to make the scoops semetrical to each other. Parts: Air Deflector (any hardware store): $6, 3M double sided tape: $3, price for more cooler air...priceless. Tools: Dremil, file, lighter to melt and clean the cut edges. Sorry, wasnt able to take pictures of the acttual cutting of the air deflectors but hope the pictures help. I used a table belt/drum sander to remove material and used blue tape to cover areas i didnt want scratched. If you can tell i double sided taped the scoops to the inside of the snorkle but i also added a couple drops of hot glue (or shoe goo) to add strength. You do have the options to paint it but i oppted not to. Ive had it on for a couple of days now and no problems. Good luck and enjoy! |

Great Idea!
Now test it at speeds +150 mph and hold for atleast 3 mins then come back and tell us how it held up.. BTW the you'll notice the air scoop gains at speeds above +90 mph.

isn't that blocking too much air that would usually go to the radiator? thats the radiator behind the scoops right?
Is it fine this way? and has actually anyone done any dyno testing or data logging to prove that these air scoops actually work? |

I dont think its blocking too much air to the radiator. I dont recall anyone doing a dyno yet. I just did it for fun. I figure more air is better than no air. I think the only down side is a dirty airfilter. I have the air aiming at my two K&N cone filters. Now I know that helps!

Nah, I'll keep it clear. If anything i might drills holes if im not getting enough air to the radiator but i think its ok.

Dont worry about the air to the radiator, it is only sucking it up from the top. What we should be worried about is how there is barely no air going into that snorkel without a mod like this.

Nice install! Looks like one of those "might-as-well" mods that may or may not be effective, but can't really hurt either. And it looks like fun to do!
EDIT: O wait, what if I've got these on and am driving through heavy rain? Won't the water slowly make it's way to the air filter and then eventually soak through? Could that be why the stock ones are facing downwards? |

I though about that too and while washing the car with a pressure washer. I noticed at the bottom of the stock air box a drain hole for moisture. I dont think the the air is being pulled enough to soak through the filter. I however have it aiming towards my two K&N filter. I'll find out the first day of rain. |

I made it more easy by putting the scoops where the opening is like the supreme did. I didn't do much of the cutting just clip the areas to let it set in and just apply bondo. Been on for over a week and I drive 85-110mph on it so far and it does scoop into my closed Grupe-m air box. Good excelleration gain. Not alot of noise. Best performance mod ever! Thank you roderick335i!!!
