Transmission on 328 and 330

I just wanted to know if the Automatic transmission on 328 is the same as 330?

Nop. The "old" ZF tranny is in the 330 (the 335 got an upgraded, highly improved version of the ZF made transmission) The 328i uses a real crappy POS from GM's hydramatic line (6L45R I think). I am never going to get a BMW auto again unless its a DSG (or possibly the ZF 335 tranny). My 328i Steptronic jerks, jumps, shift in the most unlogic places while in D or DS and even stalls out!!! It has been in the shop twice and BMW says "can not duplicate error". I am seriously considering filing a lemon case if this can not be resolved soon. Car has stalled out 5 times in only 11,000 miles, while driving in normal traffic. These are unpleasant events since car loses steering ability etc. when the engine dies. Knowing what I know today, I should have gotten an diffrent car.

Sorry to hear that. I have a 2006 330 and I brought my car in and they gave me a 328 rental. When in the DS mode I notice that when I down shift it shift over right away and in my 330 it takes a bit longer. I hope it just needs a software download.

thanks again for the info....

Sorry about your bad experience. The crappy POS GM tranny in my 325 worked great for the 24000 miles I had the car. I have to admit though, I never ever drove it in D or DS, only in M.

I used to think that since the origin of the transmission for the 325 said FRANCE it meant GM however Per RealOEM the only difference in transmissions when comparing the 330 to 325 is the TQ converter otherwise both trannys share the same part number (ZF).

325i, 330i, and 335i have auto trannys made by zf.

328i auto tranny is made by gm.

So the 330 is using the same transmission as 335? I didn't know that. Seems funny to me why the 328 didn't also use the ZF

Its the same manufacturer, but I dont think its the same tranmission. I had a 325 and there are very notable differences between the two transmissions.

no. the 325i and 330i have the same transmission made by zf. the 335i has a revamped transmission made by zf.

328i has a gm transmission made in france. gm has been a long time supplier of transmissions to bmw.

yeah 328i tranny sucks.. i believe the 330i tranny is much better than the new c350 from mercs also. The thing i like about theirs it holds the gear a bit longer but you get more action and pull feel from the 330i

Yeah when I drove my friends 328 I realized I couldn't downshift at times when my 335 could...

It is a lot more different and the 335 is a lot sportier auto and is more like the higher classes paddle shifting automatics (maserati, ferrari, etc).
