engine swap? 335 block in a 328?

ok dont castrate me for asking this...i wouldnt do it and dont care to know theres a hugee investment in time n money involved...but a lot of peopel with 328s seem to regret not gettin a 335(i for one am kinda one of them but not when i really think about whats best for me personally) and always ask for supercharger/turbo kits for 328s n what not....why wouldnt it be possible since the cars are basically the same to do a complete engine swap from a 335 to a 328 e92?...i mean arent the engine bays the same?...also im assuming the tranny might be different bc the 335 tranny prob can withstand more power then ours but are they the same or dif im not sure? i know the exhaust would have to be redid n retrofitted also but why wouldnt this be possible?...just a hypathetical question

Would an N54 engine swap be possible ? Yes, but at what cost you are willing to spend is the question...Its more than just dropping a motor in. Some guys have already swapped an M3 motor so anything is possible.

Its possible, but the real question is are you willing to drop $10k on your 328? If it were me and I had the money to blow Id simply sell the 328 and get a 335.

yeah but the question is...would it really be 10k? i mean what if you found a totalled 335 but the motor in tact?

i know people say that all the time but to be honest i dont like the lci's at all...i like the 07-09's look way better...and my color is hard to find in a cpo (sparkling graphite/coral red interior) so its like a dimond in the rough to find a 330xi in that color package

so just curious if it was possible

You're looking at $4-6k for the motor alone. Then add in the need to retrofit the ECU, wiring harnesses and fuel management and so forth and you're up to probably $8k. Now factor in one thing, can YOU install it or will you have to pay someone? If you can install it yourself then sure it could be less than $10k, but if you cant...well...yeah you're going to defiantly spend $10k.

engine swaps arent the easiest job, and like others have said, the cost of the motor, transmission, ecu and whatnot plus a lot of labor will outweigh the cost to trade up

If you're going to do a engine swap don't mess around and just drop an LSx in there. More bang for the buck.

Also the more power/torque you put into the car, the greater the risk of blowing the stock transmission. We both have Xi's so that is something to keep in mind.

Obviously the transmission swap is expected when dropping the new engine in. I believe our transmissions will barely hold up to an n54 , and thats why Gavin was shooting for 330hp (for a 330) max out of his theoretical supercharger.

whats the LSx...sorry if thats a noop question lol

and yeah obviously engine swap includes the tranny...but i dont see it being a total waste lets say you do the whole thing for 8ksh you would basically have a new car...i mean thats lowballin but still might be possible including the computer which i forgot to think about...and im not a fan of the lci's so trade up not happening till new models come out

In simple terms, a Corvette engine.

Like i say to all of these threads, anything is possible when it comes to engine swaps, it just depends on how much you want to spend.

Don't forget the 335i has a DI fuel system that runs at extremely high pressures. You would need to completely retrofit that too - lines, pump, etc. Then you'd need to code the DME to your vin, as all the computers are vin coded to their respected cars. I'm not sure if anyone has been able to do that yet.

It sounds like quite a lot of work all together. Not like when we did honda engine swaps, which you can do with one hand tied behind your back, and eating a sandwich at the same time.

Talk to Craven, there is a magical supercharger on its way for the N52. I'll probably have my 335is before that bad boy comes out though.

A 335i, 335is or even better a 335d ( a beast with JD chip and you need the whole drive train and suspension and braking system. If you put an LS engine or a M3 be prepared to pay up for gas plus you need to reinforce the whole car so it doesn't twist... or blowing the diff, or kill yourself as you'll have too much power for your stock suspension and stock brakes.

twist the frame? Are you aware that there is no structural difference in the cars regardless of engine..... Extra weight = safety features (larger brakes, calipers, ect.) and heavier engine....

M3 motor weighs 445 lbs. (M3 curb weight 3726 lbs (fyi the engine is around 154 lbs more than the 335 if you accept wikipedia as a source...))

The N54 weighs 286 lbs. (335i curb weight 3593 lbs)

The N52 is lighter than both... (curb weight of a 328i, 3362 lbs)

If anything the only thing needed to be reinforced will be the motor mounts which would need to be custom made. As for the diff, you would be retarded to keep the stock diff, being that it is open. You would need a LSD to exploit the full potential of a LS motor. I would go LS3 and supercharge it.

it has nothing to do with the weight of the engine but with the torque of the engine ....
