N51 Lifter Noise - HELP!

Yeah, after further research and consideration my lifter noise isn't so unusual, it's just more severe than most. After listening to a few other videos, I could tell they have my exact noise; that is, the normal mild ticking plus one or two louder "knocks," which probably means I'm in for a lifter (HVA - hydraulic valve adjuster) replacement if my oil change and a couple of additives (plus some spirited driving over a month or two) doesn't automatically quiet them down.

I have the same exact thing that happens to my car.

Exactly, spirited driving as well as oil and additives can do the trick.

The thing is, short drives lead to more prominent ticking. The longer the drive the better. You don't need to drive like a maniac all over the place. But, if you're going to drive a short distance, manual mode it, and keep the revs at a moderate rate (i.e. frequent visits to 3k-4k rpms).

Speaking of oil and additives, a personal recommendation of mine is LiquiMoly 5W-40, alongside two bottles of Ceratec. I got these from FCP Euro, a tad pricey with everything all together, and depending where you live it may take a while to come in, but it is much cheaper than amazon, or any local stores who may carry it.

If you need anymore info regarding this, PM me.
Always happy to help.

Thanks for the reply, Alex. I've done pretty much everything I can do: spirited driving, 30-minute trips to the nearby grocery store (short drives turned into long ones), start the car and let it idle and warm up before driving it at all, revving the engine in Park @ 2K RPM for 3-5 minutes, oil changes to thicker viscosity, oil additives (recently the Hy-Per Lube ZINC replacement mentioned in another post, which worked for that person; previously a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil, recommended by the BMW Tech), long drives in 4th and 5th gear...

As it stands now it's relatively quiet at startup, but then that one particular knock comes along after it starts to warm up, and after any kind of driving. Seems I have a (at least one) collapsed exhaust HVA/lifter, and I can't get it to take oil to re-pressurize it. I really don't want to let it go for too long in the hope that it might quiet down soon/eventually, so I'm at the point of replacing the 12 lifters. For which I need the VANOS/timing tools, but I digress. So unless there's a change for the better in the next two weeks, it looks like I'm pulling the valve cover and exhaust camshaft. Lookin' forward the THAT!

I noticed my N52 was considerably quieter after I switched to LiquiMoly MolyGen 5w40 from Castrol 5w40. I did a LiquiMoly engine flush beforehand and also added some CeraTec like Alex. Very happy so far. Economy and power seem to be improved.
