A gentleman I know has recently given me some dust caps. Chrome and shaped like a piston, so there you go.

That's amazing! Did he give them to you by a pure act of kindness? Set the scene, how did this come about? People don't just walk up to you and give you dust caps. Give us the full story...

Now I don't want any jealously here:

When Kwik Fit replaced my knackered tyre, they very kindly put a bog standard black plastic dust cap on the new valve. As all should know, my car has metal caps as standard.

The gentleman concerned heard of my 'plight' and he happens to work for a general automotive parts supplier. His job invloves sales basically, where he drives around in a large van laden with all sorts of stuff visiting various companies etc. He very kindly went to a car parts shop in Hull and got the chrome, piston shaped dust caps. He had tried to get the OE ones but the place didn't sell them. I offered to pay for said dust caps, but he refused.

Chilvalry is not dead

BTW Beauforty, ebay have the classier ones.

Have you read the story of how 'dustcaps.com' was formed?

http://www.sjscycles.com/dustcaps/vIndex.htm

Breathtaking stuff. I expect that they will make a film version with Leonardo di Capprio as James Thorn.

It's always been my childhood dream to work in the dustcap industry.

After having two sets of metal caps nicked from my previous car I saw the perfect solution on e-bay. A bit like the lock nut on a car, the cap just revolved unless you used a special tool which fitted over the cap.

Well, it sort of worked - I only lost two!

Current BMW caps are metal - let's see how long they last.

The story of dustcaps.com is extremely moving. The anticipation of what was going to happen next was absolutely enthralling...

This is easily going to be made into a film one day. I can see a well respected older actor such as Brian Blessed playing James Thorn's father.

Surely the combination of Dicaprio, Blessed and this deeply moving story is enough to guarantee a film hit? I would pay to go and see it. In fact, I would stop pretending to be a student and would be willing to play the full adult price for a change...

NFS - its not too late to get into the dust cap industry. Why don't we get together and set up a dustcap business to exploit this considerably attractive business opportunity? I'm confident we could make millions given the likely high mark-up we could get on such a non-commoditised and very bespoke product that very few people in the world supply. I can see there is huge potential...

We could call our business something original like "Dustcaps 4 U"

Great call. I can see it now .. Blessed tearing at his enormous beard and crying 'nooo ... ' in his trademark booming voice on learning that the domain name 'dustcaps.com' has already been registered.

While the father descends into a spiral of despair, drinking and other self destructive behaviour, the plucky di Caprio must battle his own demons.

Will he ever measure up to the legend that his father has become in the retail cycle industry? How can he carve his niche in the world now that his dream of running the UK's premier on-line dustcap sales business has been so cruelly destroyed.

I see it as a 'coming of age' story, exploring the relationship between the 2 men through despair, triumph and ultimately redemption when they are able to buy the domain name and set up the website complete with a charmingly amateurish typeface, garish font colours and badly focused poor quality images.

I like your thinking on 'dustcaps 4 u' by the way. I see the market opening up in a more sports oriented direction, with ultra-lightweight carbon fibre quick-release dustcaps being our flagship product.

I love the page on "Product Info" that nearly blinded me given the kaleidoscope of colours. It goes into immense detail regarding the dustcaps. Although quite lengthy, I thought I would post the entire extract below:

"Dustcaps come in different shapes and sizes. They screw on to the valves of bicycles or cars to keep the dust out hence - they are called dustcaps! They vary in size from around 1.5cm to 2.7cm. Some are made from metal and some are made from plastic."

Still with me? I know that was long, but wow they really didn't need to go into that level of detail...

I can't get the vision of Brian Blessed out my head now with his booming voice shouting "dustcaps" all the time!

They really are the ultimate source of 'specialist knowledge' when it comes to dustcaps

I missed this page. I think he is being slightly optimistic about the value of his 'company'.

"plese RING ME before buying so i can check you are proper!"

NFS - our dreams of becoming dustcap entrepreneurs could come true!!

When someone asks me "so what line of work are you in", I've always wanted to say "dustcaps"... "you know, those small caps that protect your tyres from dust"...

I like the way he says ring me before buying!

I can't imagine anyone sending £10,500 without some form of negotiation. I would offer £10,495 and go from there...

How are ever going to make a go of the business if you don't even know that dust caps protect the valves from dust and shite and not the tyres.

Right - for all those who took the piss (you know who you are as well), the infamous BMW dust caps are now surplus to requirements. Therefore if any of you lot want them 'gratis' they're yours. First come, first served gentlemen.

Oh and I fully expect to be 'stampeded in the rush' as well.
