Has anyone discussed maybe leaving either pipe labeled A or B (one of the two) with 25% or 50% packing and replacing the other with a solid piece of pipe?

From what I have read in this entire thread is that the people who scoped the BMW PE saw a solid pipe which would be pipe labeled B. Thus maybe we replace pipe B with a solid pipe and remove some of the packing around pipe A?

I will be doing something like this soon. I'm going to have the mufflers cut open, remove at least half of the filling, cover roughly half the perforated piping and possibly do a straight pipe where the resonator/cat is located.

So no one has cut open a PE or 335is exhaust yet? It would finally give us an answer.

That being said, I'm thinking the best bet is what Conrad suggested above - solid pipe for portion B with full packing, and reduce packing around portion A.

I'd like to know that also. Chances are high that a muffler shop would know though. Wrapping is probably better than creating a straight pipe for drone as I would expect it to absorb some of the sound and keep the resonance down a little more.

I'm curious about the drone (if there is any).

^ but in my personal opinion, i don't like the sound without the packing material, which it sounds a bit rattly to me....

if the person wrap it with exhaust wrap (my belief) and no packing material, that's the cause of the rattly sound. I would avoid this setup.

I did the passenger side mod. As it was "recommended", pipe A with light packing and pipe B solid material. Here's some pics. I'm happy with the end result, zero drone and still decently silent when driving an a highway. Anyhow, I really would like someone (take one to the team ;-) to open one PE exhaust to see what is inside.

I never knew everyone recommended to only remove packing on the passenger side. I thought everyone removed packing from both sides. I remember seeing in this thread that coupe or sedan only had packing on one side, which was it?

Who ever cuts open the Performance Exhaust will be a LEGEND.

You will go into the Hall Of Fame. Good things will happen to you for the rest of your life. You'll walk down the street and people will wave to you and shake your hand. At a BMW meets you'll be know as "The Guy". You will randomly receive free bmw parts at your house just because.

So come on you brave soul, let us praise you and cut open that PE and show us the bmw secret.

I think it was originally stated that there was packing on one side. However, new reports state that packing is on both sides.

It seems there is packing on just one side for the E92 and packing on both sides for the E90.

That would make sense since I guess they would want the sedan to be quieter.

How much does doing something like this cost?

After studying a lot of relevant material and possibly the true drawings of the PE or 335is exhaust. I spent half an hour to do step one. Results - slight gurgle sound. Next- amplify the high frequency

So you wrapped the perforated pipe with header wrap?

Honestly, maybe leave a bit more that isolation wool more in the muffler.... or then cover the pipe maybe 75%. Its pretty "raw" sound, not so smooth -> despite the rawness, it puts smile on your face when you revvit, the sound is "brutal/raw"

When you start 335 in the morning.... neighbours will certainly hear it .

No video/audio available, you need to hear it live, to make some sort of an estimation about the noise volume... or then have pro audio-mics.

+1, I'd like to see one too.

@Jengstro If I read correctly, you covered all the perforated pipes with header tape and how much muffler packing was removed?
