Expensive mistake!

Arrived back from Germany yesterday to find out my partner had put petrol in my diesel 320d M Sport!

Lucky for me (and her) she only drove it 4 miles before realising. My local dealer recovered it and 348 pounds later it's ready to be collected Monday

Ow well live and learn......

Bloody hell, happens an awful lot these days, i dont doubt she didnt know what she was doing, she probably did, just had other things on her mind maybe?

The fact she got 4 miles is worrying... must have run like pig shit

Poor car. Hope there is no lasting damage.

Ooops, shouldn't be any lasting damage though. I know someone who put diesel in a petrol car - isn't this far worse?

other way round as I understand it....doesn't petrol ruin the rubber seals used in diesel fuel pumps?? (needs the diesel to lubricate them i think?)

Ex-wife filled my old 306Hdi up with petrol also but realised as soon as she had paid for it!! - Got the AA to tow it home and siphoned the tank!

My local dealer, North Oxford BMW, were really good. Recovered it and fixed it in the same day. Couldn't collect it today as to busy so will have to do it Monday.

New filters, fuel lines etc. It could of been worse. Just bad timing with Christmas and a baby due in 4 weeks.

Just collected my new car today so we are now running 2 diesels instead of 1 petrol and 1 diesel. No excuses now if she should do it again

No lasting damage the car has been fully checked and road tested. The petrol just about got to the engine before she stopped so no other damage apart from filters, fuel lines etc.

Paul, I understood that diesel fuel pumps now use ceramic seals and if they are rubber, it would take prelonged use to damage the seals? Diesel in a petrol engine though will not ignite due to variations in compression ratio. The diesel also washes oil from the bores and can block injectors. Anyhow, fingers crossed, I haven't put petrol in the 335d yet! Know a woman who has 3 times put petrol in her diesel Freelander. Is it always women who do this?

ouch .. glad it didnt cause permanent damage, and is back to you soonish

i was in the lake district last year and my mate put diesel in his motorbike by mistake, he went and payed for it and rode off ... he didnt notice till overtook him and flagged him down, becasue i could hardly see for all the thick black smoke coming from his exhaust. Went to a local garage and drained it out , no damage done at all ... he wont live that one down

I was at a Landrover dealership a few months ago and a brand new top of the range Ranger Rover was being dropped off by a recovery truck.

The owners daughter had put petrol in it and drove it until it went bang!

Can you imagine the phonecall....Dad,you know that car you just bought,well.....

I wonder why the car manufacturers haven't devised a different shaped nozzle whereby a diesel nozzle wouldn't fit into a petrol filler neck and vice-versa. They did it when the change from leaded to unleaded came about by making the unleaded filler with a smaller diameter than the leaded filler. Maybe square or triangular would work. The retrofit would cost too much, though. And then there would be some idiot that would still try to circumvent it for some screwy reason.

If a comprehensive insurance policy covers accidental damage, can misfortunes like this not qualify for a valid claim?

Ouch! At least she realised before major damage was done.

Petrol filler nozzles are actually smaller than diesel ones, so assuming that the filler receptacle is sized correctly you shouldn't really be able to put diesel into a petrol. However, as putting petrol into a modern diesel can be catastrophic you'd think they would do something about it.

Something like the piece below could help if the nozzles are designed to suit. You could slot the diesel pump over the inner piece, but the petrol nozzle would not engage, giving you fair warning.

The stupid thing about my E92 and the wife's E91 is that the fuel cap holder and the 'diesel' labels behind the fuel filler flap are in 'unleaded' green. This has made me nearly put in unleaded a couple of times when my head is away off in daydreamland.

Why can't they make diesel pump nozzles a different shape?

They have - Ford have done it with the new Mondeo; The diesel nozzl;e will not fit in the petrol cars fuel-filler-neck and vice versa.

The infrastrusture costs of changing nozzles/tank filler necks will just be too high to see different shaped pump nozzles. Additionally, can you imagine the outrage at having to spend a few hundred quid changing your filler neck on your own car because a tiny percentage of the population can't get the right fuel in their tank?

I don't forsee anything happening to change the design of the current nozzle/neck design, although I do envisage a market penetration of electronic reminders telling you which fuel you should use upon opening the fuel cap.

I think the next petrol station forecourt revolution will be hydrogen pumps, in about 20 years.....

lol, try putting 3/4 tank petrol in and then running it 180 miles!

If I remember correctly, it was circa £3600 repair. Complete engine strip / replace injectors etc.. They were actually amazed I got home on it, come to think of it so was I!

I thought the turbo had gone, had no idea that petrol had gone in. I phoned the dealer and they said if it was running to get it home and bring it to them in the morning. Ouch they werent too happy when I followed their instructions.

Apparently some Mercedes are even dearer to refit!!
