Well its all done except for the remote display which I want to expirment with for a while to see where I can place it that will be visible enough for me to read and low enough to tap/mute and stay out of sight as well.

I mounted mine V1 to the right of the mirrow as I thought it tucked in there a little better than the left side. I ran the cord along the windshield, down the pillar, into the glovebox like most others. I added one improvement IMHO in adhering the control box to the removable back plate of the glovebox. It lines up with the torx screw just a few mms lower. I left enough slack so it can be removed and serviced easily.

I then ran the concealed telephone wire out the back of the glovebox ziptied it across the ductwork tucking in all the extra slack. I then ran the last foot or so wedged between the aluminum console and rubber trim. For now, I like the concealed display to the left of the ashtray. If I mount it there I plan to use a thin foam double sided tape as the velcro it comes with it too thick for a flush fit.

Anways here are some pics. I also wanted to show the fusepanel layout differences for those who were confused with the pics here. Additionally, I took a shot of how I had to bend the fuses to be able to push the fusetap in fully.

Everything worked out in the end. Thanks again Josh.

Temporay location...the ashhtray lid actually holds it in place quite snugly and is almost in the completely open position.

I thought about locating it in the ashtray, but thats even further from my line of sight and I did not want to tear apart the console yet.

Just got done with my stealth install. Pics to follow. The concealed display looks great in the vent though and the remote audio is plenty loud enough in the ashtray. Also, with the ashtray lid closed, when the detector goes off, I can just tap the ashtray lid to mute as it's just enough to hit the audio button on the remote audio. Works nicely.

Yeh...pics.

Another mounting tip I discovered. Menard's and Im sure the other big box stores sell a very nice adhesive solution for mounting the concealed unit.

I found it over in the paint section by all the velcro and tape.

Anyways, I used these ~1"x1" black foam double sided squares. The nice part is they are removable/temporary. I thought about velcro but its too thick and is visible in the mount.

So is your ashtray always open? Its not that hard to put it in the ashtray(that piece pulls out to give you more room) and its not much further out of sight. Secondly, how often do you really need to see a warning when it a radar detector? You only need sound. When you hear it, you slow down, doesnt matter where its coming from. Thats how I look at it.

Quick pics:

Very very very short write up:

The install was actually pretty easy. The hardest part was getting the A/C vent disassembled, and putting the kick panels back on after running the phone cord from the glove box to the 3rd brake light. They pop right off, but putting them back on is a pain.

Everything else was straight forward and just took a little tweaking... The V1 is mounted with the sunvisor clip, and with velcro on the inside of the 3rd brake light cover. I wanted the velcro there to make sure it stayed put, and prevent it from flying off in an accident. The middle seat is useless now as the V1 intrudes on headroom (I'm 5'8" and my head touches the V1 in that seat).

The remote audio controller was necessary for me, as I wanted the audio to come from the general front area of the car instead of from the V1 unit in the back. Also, I want to be able to turn off and change the volume from where I sat in the driver's seat. The unit fits just right in the ashtray. Tapping the cover of the ashtray while it is closed, mutes the V1 as the button just gets pressed when that happens, and the ashtray cover remains closed. It takes a bigger push to open the ashtray. Sound from the remote audio unit is loud and clear inside there.

The concealed display works fantastic in the AC vent. I removed the set of fins that directs airflow from left to right. I COULD have left it in there and made the concealed display fit. I took the display apart and was able to squeeze it in there with all the vents. But the horizontal and vertical vents got in the way of the display. Instead, I just removed the "vertical" set of vents (no cutting required, just pops out), and mounted the display behind the horizontal slats. There is enough clearance that you can still close the vent with the roller 0/1 thing.

I mounted the display on the "top" side of the vent because the concealed display's lights align better with the vent that way. The bogey counter is fully visible, as are the strength lights. What is blocked is the X-band LED (I have X-band turned off, and the side-to-side arrow is mostly blocked. The most important info is there though and it's perfect since it is at the same level as the other gauges. I hated having to look down by the ashtray to see the concealed display... I had it there temporarily for 2 days before I started the hardwire install.

Any questions, ask away... but really it's quite simple to do and everything is self explanatory once you start pulling panels off.

No...I can close it after I used some of this temporary double sided foam tape. See my post above.

I was and still am considering the ashtray, but then I lose my coin holder. I like the audio remote idea with the cover tap to mute as I do like to see the bogey counter and silencing it is important to me as well so it needs to be in easy reach. Just sounds like some additional work. Maybe a winter project.

That vent setup does look cool though.

Is it just the picture or does the angle of the rear mount seem quite a few degrees from parallel?

Not just the picture... The main unit is a little off parallel. I put some felt pads to get the right angle on it but put too many on there. Just went out there at lunch to look at it and I definitely have to tweak that a bit so that it is level with the ground, or slightly tilts down toward the front so it has a better view through the front windshield.

Nice setup. You're right that looking down in the ashtray is a pain , but I think I got used to it. Most of the time I don't even look and just push the mute button unless it's a Ka signal.

Check out the custom V1 programming then. I have mine setup to where I have X band totally disabled, and K band only makes noise once the signal is strong enough to 6 lights. There are quite a few options that you can program and I've found it useful in the areas where we drive.

I'm just used to the V1 concealed display in the general level of the gauges as in my previous cars I've had a similar setup, so I felt the need to do this little mod...

I tried both directions...you must have a diff fuse panel layout than what I posted in the pics above. I had fuses in both directions.

Quick update...

I don't think the V1 in that third brake light position is the best. Frontal coverage seems to suffer, but maybe I just need to tweak how the V1 sits (the front is still pointed upwards towards the roof a bit).

The mute through tapping the ashtray cover is annoying, because sometimes the ashtray cover opens if you tap it too hard. I'm going to get one of the Audi guys from another forum to fab me a mute cable. I believe he sells on eBay as agravic or something similar, he's on the Audi forums that I used to frequent and made a cable just for muting... I'll put that at the base of my shifter for mute functionality.

Is the third brake light mount just to be more discreet and keep the windshield clutter free?

I applaud the effort, I was lazy and thought it tucked in real tidy to the right of the mirror.

Yeah it's for more discreetness. People don't notice it, even people who have V1s... Had a couple co-workers sitting in the car and 2 people got into the back seat, and neither of them noticed it. One of them has a V1 in his WRX as well. It wasn't until the remote audio beeped that he realized there was a V1 in the car and he was looking all over the windshield and dash to see where it was.
