I had a few lights scuffs on my windshield. One came from where the passenger wiper blade stops its motion and reverses. I don't know where the other came from, it looks like a bug smear. These scratches are quite light and can only be seen in strong backlight. But they were annoying. I also have a lot of small stone chips. I decided to polish them out.

What is needed:
1. 1 oz Cerium Oxide powder(I bought mine from ebay)
2. LC white polishing pad and orbital polisher
3. Spray bottle with water
4. Roll of shop towels.

How long did it take: About an hour.

Steps
1. Mix some Cerium Oxide with water into a paste-like consistency. I used about 2 heaping Tablespoons and this was plenty to do the entire front windscreen.
2. Apply some paste to the windscreen.
3. Spritz some water onto the white pad.
4. Polish with the PC polisher set at 5. I went slow, moving the polisher about 1 inch per second and going over the same 12" x 12" area for about 5 minutes. Don't let the residue dry out. Give the windscreen an occasional spritz with water.
5. Repeat steps 2-4 till the entire windscreen, or the area you want to polish, is done.
6. Use a damp shop towel to wipe up dried residue from glass. Finish with your favorite glass dressing. I used Invisible Glass.
7. I gave the car a quick water rinse to get rid of some cerium spatter on the hood.


The polishing worked really well. It did NOT take out the deeper stone chips in my windscreen but it got rid of many of the smaller ones. The light scratches are gone. Perhaps the deeper chips could also be polished out but that will probably take much more time.

seems pretty straightforward.. i've been trying to figure out the removal of pitting too.. they glisten just so when the light hits the windshield...

guess I'm not the only one looking out to a galaxy every night. it's annoying. i need to do this on all my cars, especially my dad's GMC Jimmy.. the stone chips are so bad on that thing I'm thinking the entire windshield should be replaced. will try this first though.

Just did this today with cerium oxide from ebay. I purchased a 4 ounce container but only used about half an ounce. I did a 4:1 water to cerium oxide mix and it turned out well. When doing this, you just have to be careful to keep the glass lubricated or else you risk additional scratches to polish out.

Another warning is that cerium oxide polishing will strip your glass of any coatings; you will need to apply/reapply a water repellent in order to restore the glass's liquid resistance. I used aquapel.

It will work on headlamps; however, as mentioned above, the cerium oxide strips away protective coatings that may be on the headlights.
