First road trip- 37 mpg. Happy ex-tdier

Since there are quite a few of us tdi converts, I figured it would report back on our first road trip in the 2011 335d.

I did about 280 miles from Seattle to Westport (ocean). Terrain went up and down gradually (no major mountain passes or anything). Used cruise control most of the time (65-69 mph).. Had bad weather on the way there - pouring rain and wind. Beautiful weather (although 40-50 degrees F) on the way back.

Found cruise control does a good job at "eco" driving (at least better than my foot. Also found that getting up to speed (beyond 40 mph) quickly also got better mpg than slowly accelerating. Once you are in 4th gear you can cruise getting 30+mpg easily.

I have a feeling that with only highway driving I could hit 40 mpg fairly easily.

One thing I noticed was the computer said I was averaging 35.1 mpg, while hand calculating the mpg I got 37.1.

Overall impressed with everything except for the base stereo (my Jetta has better sound).

I came from a 2010 Jetta TDI and can say I'm very happy driving this car, but not very happy when I'm repairing. That said, did your Jetta have the premium sound system? My Jetta had the base sound system, and I can say the BMW base sound system is miles ahead. I had a 10 inch sub installed in the Jetta and that helped it a ton, but even still, the base BMW system is better. I even removed the sub from the Jetta today and listened to some music. It was very subpar. Played the same song in the BMW and it sounded 10 times better.

IDK, I had the Fender system in my Jetta and find the base system in the D to be just fine in comparison. Both could use an upgrade though.

My mom's Passat had the Fender system, and my Jetta had the base system. The Fender system was miles ahead of the base Jetta system, and the BMW base system, IMO, is almost as good as the Fender system. That said, if I could find some plug and play speakers to replace the BMW base ones that didn't cost a ton, I'd certainly upgrade. Just not something I'm actively going for right now.

"base" system in BMW

The "base" system is fairly rare in BMWs: only 2010 and early 2011. So the OP may indeed have the base system. But there are several opinions expressed here; it may be possible that there is confusion between "base" and "hifi". You may want to go here: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=641323 to find what you really have.

FYI, I have/had the base system in my 2010, but have done the Alpine upgrade path and now have essentially the HiFi system (actually a bit better since it has better speakers than the original OEM HiFi.) BMW was doing a cost-cutting ant thought it could sneak in a really awful system.

Sounds normal. Mine shows 1 to 3 mpg under hand calculated most of the time.

It may just have been the audio in cord that I was using... I ordered a new one so lets see if that helps.

Anyone have a good bluetooth streaming adapter to recommend?

Tune 2 Air is easily the best option for when you have the USB and AUX port under the armrest. Works flawlessly and lets me use steering wheel controls with Spotify. I love it.
