how do you know if you have turbo lag?

I'm new to BMW and I'm planning to purchase a CPO e90 335xi. it has about 60,000 miles on it. Just yesturday I went to test drive the car and noticed that when I was on the free way, there seems to be a slight hesitation when I stomped on the car to test the turbo. The lag is about, 1-2 seconds?

I was wondering if this qualifies as a turbo lag or is it just part of the car? Does the newest software updates this issue? Also, being a CPO car, does the warranty cover this issue? Would the new extended warranty on the fuel pump cover the turbo lag? thanks!

It's funny you mention the fuel pump. One of BMW's rememdies to prevent fuel pump failure was to update the software which unfortunately induced more lag.

But as far as defining the lag, I think it's safe to say when you're on the freeway and punch it, you'll get full power in just under a second. If it's bad enough to where it bothers you, obviously stay away.

What year and what kind of transmission does the car have?

You could ask the dealer to check what software version is in the car. This should tell you if it had been updated to address the wastegate rattle issue.

Either way, the 2 second delay you speak of sounds like too much to me.
