oil level refresh

Anyone know how often the oil level indicator refreshes? I just had my oil changed yesterday at Passport. As I'm driving down Auth road after leaving the d-ship I checked the level and it was about 1/4 inch below max (non-idrive) -- same exact level as before the oil change. So, I'm thinking either they didn't do the oil change, or they didn't fill it up all the way. I did a U and went back to tell them (Service people were all gone for the day.) Checked again after I restarted the car, same result. Checked again as I was pulling onto the beltway, same result. But wait, I checked again when I got to the Wilson Bridge, and voila, it was up to max. So I figure the indicator must refresh on a certain cycle. Anyone else experience this?

Should not be a big deal. If you get low on oil, just bring it in, and they will top it off for free...

Hey is this a universal practice/fact, my SA said no on free refills...he called them 'consumables' that are not covered under maintenance plan. I was starting to argue but he kept on denying and I didn't have solid facts....

I have gone in twice for a topping of my oil, and BMW of Sterling did it with no questions asked. Both times, pulled up to the service bay, they did it in front of me in 2 minutes, I was on my way... no charges...

edit... I did get charged an arm and a leg for my tire, but believe it or not, the CCA discount saved me $65 on it... worth the CCA membership alone...

yeah but I'm still not sure if the top ups are courtesy gestures or is explicitly laid out in the full maintenance plan. I need to try a differnet dealer, I feel like I don't click with my SA.

Aren't you worried your oil level sensor might be faulty?
