Why are the gear shifters different on these E90s?

I was wondering, why does one have the newer feature over the other - the cars are both 2010, E90 LCI's.

I have seen a few cars like this now, some with the new shifter and some with the old type.

Can anyone explain why this is?

Bottom is a Euro car with DCT. And they're actually both E92 (door panels).

I live in the UK and have ordered an auto - I'm guessing this is different to DCT altogether?

I really like the look of the DCT shifter!

I believe the DCT is an option in Europe, doesn't come default just with any automatic transmission.

We couldn't get DCT at all in the US except for ordering a 335is or M3. Or we could retro fit the shift knob and pretend to be

Of course you won't really get the DCT transmission, but you do get the look of the DCT shifter, and yes the lights on the shifter knob does work too.

The first pic could be an E90 same door panel as my E90.

cup holders are the best invention after sliced bread. poor europeans don't get them in 3 series! I don't see a compelling reason for not having them. I would also engineers a burger holder and a fries holder w/ kethup dispenser for the heck of it.

You can get that shifter handle direct from Norelco.

You have an ambient light strip and fold out lower door pocket on your E90?

cup holders are an option here, i have them in my e92 because i imported it from the usa but i did not get them on my other car.

if i ordered the car i would not get cup holders ... EVER. no drinking in the car no way.
