Pcemkr was right - my wife was driving her car, I was in her back seat, and my brother was driving my BMW about 60 down the freeway.

For a Nikon D7000, here are my tips for panning.
1. Use shutter priority (mode S on Nikon) and a speed of 1/speed of car or 1/2-3x speed. I like to see a spin to the wheels, not a total blur. I use 1/200 as a start for most or 1/640 for top fuel. Faster shutters are less blur but a higher hit rate when practicing. 2. Set it to Continuous Hi and either Single or Continuous focus. Do you want 1 good or a bunch of OK focus shots. Also set single point or full dynamic focus. Both work to pick up a single car. 3. Find a location where you can see the car a few seconds before framing into the shots. Let the camera focus to the expected distance so it doesn't have to work hard to get the shot. And then be ready to aim to the approaching car(s). 4. I use my body as a tripod and can pan easier than if a fixed tripod. I swivel my upper body to pan. 5. As the car comes into the shot location, start your pan of the car to frame it and acquire focus, and the press and hold the trigger for a burst of 3-4 shots. With practice you'll get 1 or more sharp well composed shots. 6. Start with wider angle shots to reduce chances of an out of frame shot. Zoom closer with practice. 7. The ultimate lens for this is the 70-200 f2.8. It doesn't miss a shot. Period! I can pick up multiple shots of every car in a group, re-focus to the next group, take 1000s of shots over a day, and hardly have a single shot out of focus. But the 70-300 or even an 18-200 will work OK. See http://sirsnapsalot.smugmug.com/Cars...1844&k=C3jHpRc for examples from the Petit Lemans last year. Note I did use a tripod in the dark. Browse to other galleries in "cars" to see other race events, such as One Lap of America.

It's not that difficult but best results do take practice. Try going to a road race or driving school. Lots of opportunities for practice. You should be able to get close to the action, along a straight or the exit to a big curve.

They are certainly not overdone, just enough to bring out some of the dark areas.

Yeah... I'm real jealous. The shots were taken in direct sunlight. You should have had no problem exposing them.

... not possible to correctly expose the sky, bright areas of the car, and dark areas of the car with natural lighting in one shot. Maybe most of the car would look alright, but the sky would be completely washed out.
