Ok folks,

So, I've spent some time digging around and I think I have found perhaps the BEST oil catch can available on the market.

I am talking about some OEM Industrial Grade product that is currently being used in wide variety of commercial fleets of vehicles.

Cost = $165.

Why is this better than ANYTHING else out there:

1. It is designed for heavy duty turbo diesel truck engines. Basically, this thing can withstand the pressure of the big turbochargers that are found in diesel trucks.

2. This thing is the MOST OEM looking unit you can find. It looks like another power steering canister.

3. It has a built in filtration. The filters are either replaceable or washable. This is good because oil and water vapors will be separated and will not freeze during the winter.

4. It is damn cheap compared to the aftermarket OCCs out there.

5. It is WIDELY adopted by members of TDIClub.com, e46fanatics.com, vwvortex.com, fourtitude.com and all kinds of other online communities.

It looks like this thing is engineered to perform like nothing else out there. I see no reason why we can't use it in our engines and end this $250.00 OCC bullshit. Not to mention that it is guaranteed to work a lot better than probably any aftermarket OCC out there!

Thanks for sharing Vasil, any member that tries to bring the OCC price down is a good contributor to me.

I will keep an eye on this OCC you mention and will also continue working on getting my new custom 42DraftDesigns OCC fitted to my N54. We'll find something that works well for a fair price, one way or the other.

great find - smaller coalescence type filter from one of the best known filtration specialists. Others are Donaldson and Fleetguard, the latter one has a great one too but too large and too expensive

I'll be looking for suppliers of this one tomorrow

Its not bad at all. A trip to the local Home Depot will give you all the hoses and fittings you need.

Fella's, I looked into this can 2 years ago and this thing is huge. The can is almost 9 inches (221mm) long and 4 inches (105mm) wide at the lid (This does not take into account the relief valve mounted on the side or the bracket needed to mount it). Have a look at the dimensions and measure a location in your engine bay..... You will be hard pressed to find a location where this fits in an N54 engine bay. It may just fit next to the radiator on the right hand side but the bottom of the can may just touch the radiator hose due to the fact that its also very long.
On another note, this thing is designed to drain blowby oil back to the crankcase (below the oil level) using positive pressure of the catch can and crankcase vacuum, which draws the oil out of the catch can. If used like this you also need to install a check valve to prevent siphoning of the oil from the crankcase to the can.
It's design and principles look solid but may be in-practicle for use on our engines, as you would need to find a location where the oil returns into the crankcase.

After fittings, hoses and a bracket you pretty much are at the price of the BSH and AR OCC price.

Maybe fittings, but for hoses I'd go to an autoparts store (oil and temp resistant).

Sparky: thanks for the info, it is discouraging indeed. The customized 42DD catch can I got is pretty beefy too (pic1, pic2), but not as big as this one. I'll take measurements and post them here tonight.

I actually hope that I'm not discouraging its use at all............rather the opposite. If this thing could be setup to return Blow-by oil back to the sump somehow, I would be all over this. This is possibly the best setup for a catch can there is, other than AR designs setup which also seems like an excellent idea.
Since the Manns Hummel Provent has a filter, it obviously will need some maintenance further along, down the road. That's not a problem for me, as I would check it at every engine oil change.
The only other setup I have seen which is totally maintenance free is a fully sealed Swirl pot design which comes from Crawford Performance in Oceanside, San Diego County, California, but the price is rediculous.....so it was never a viable option to me. It's so good that Ken Block runs one in his WRX STI Gymkhana car.

I hear you... but the size is what makes it look less viable. The Crawford OCC looks nice, but price is .

Its not THAT big. There are several locations where you could mount this. Frankly, I would not mount it anywhere closer to the exhaust manifold anyway because the plastic may start to warp, weaken and eventually crack. If I was to use this Mann oil catch can, I'd stick it either inside the fender or somewhere on the driver side engine bay.
