they're legal with the proper paperwork. BATF tax stamp and gun trust/LLC necessary to legally possess such things. it's a huge pain in the ass and pretty much illegal or virtually impossible to obtain in some states like california. i don't know if OP's suppressors are legal or actually real suppressors, but sometimes people buy goofy fake suppressors just for show, which are 100% legal for anyone to own.

Why do they have silencers? Because guns (especially rifles) are uncomfortably loud would be my guess. I'd have one if they weren't such a PITA to get here. Ridiculous. In a lot of other countries with stricter gun laws than ours a silencer is no big deal. They're no more complex than the muffler on your car.

My neighbor has one on his AR-15. It just a "Fwump", like one of those little fireworks mortars going off.

Huh? I don't have kids- just really sensitive hearing. I don't even go to concerts since I find them painfully loud. There's no need for me to suffer hearing loss just because some meth-head picks my house to rob (and yes- a meth head did try to break into my house one night while my wife and I were at home. A neighbor saw them and they took off. I bought a gun the next day).

Shooting indoors is EXTREMELY loud.

What is so scary about a silencer? Are you also afraid of cars with mufflers since you can't hear them from as far away?
