Thanks for doing this. What was the difference in peak HP? Around 10hp?

my two cents for anyone looking at the "big gain" before 4k RPMs isn't completely relevant. When you're at the track, you're shifting above that point. The AFR just looks like it needs to be adjusted also as they were quite different between the runs.

I'm not taking away credit to the intake, I'm just curious if the tune is registering it differently.

edit: ^^ His question is my main point Though in the video it says 9whp gain... I assume that's peak.

Still interesting results, on a car that has full bolt ons 10whp 12wtq is all you really need from an intake.

Its not going to throw crazy numbers like 25whp like they claim

Max HP difference is 9 whp and Max TQ difference is 12 wtq with higher temps from the previous dyno run with the stock intake w/ the K&N drop in filter

I assume "peak" is refering to "max" on the dyno ? If not the dyno sheet does not show "peek" only max gains. If peak and max are suppose to be difference then I can get that info.

We're on the same page... that's what I was saying. Just pointing out that you noted it in the video.

Who wants to be the first to say it?

Is $1k (or $800 if you look at the discounted prices) for this intake really worth it? It looks pretty, but for a supposed improvement in a non-quantifiable metric ('smoothness') and very moderate gains, I would suggest DCI's or pretty much any other more reasonable priced intake.

This intake definitely has aesthetics on its side. DCI's look pretty ghetto, but they do the trick. The Stett or UR CAI's would be higher on my list.

This intake isnt $1000 or $800..

Its retail listed at $595.

You're thinking of Part number: 50-81472

List of $1195 Retail. This thread is not about that intake though.

^Ahh, I was looking at the "Elite" aFe intake. My bad.

Another question then - the OP did a fair bit of modifying to the intake to ensure it was truly sealed. Is it worth $600 plus the time to modify it for the gains shown? For some, maybe...?

Well if your looking for $$/HP just slap on some nitrous for under $500 and choose the nozzle for the power you want

If anything, what it cost me was for the benefit of the community. There was a lot more funds involved just for the research of this intake, baseline dynos, and gas.

This intake is flexible and highly customizable.

aFe has seen the review and are taking the next steps to make a gasket kit available, and coming out with a newer version intake that will be one piece.

And thanks to you, the revised intake may be worth the asking price.

It's a bit crazy that you, an independent consumer, spent all the time and money on R&D and testing this intake as opposed to the actual manufacturer of the product. Hopefully they send you a couple stickers haha.

Consumers make products better

On a side note, I ordered this intake also. How was the install?

Nice write up, thanks for taking the time.
Do you have any dyno sheets comparing the Dinan to the AFE with the same tune and supporting mods? Just curious since you had it as well. The air inlet from the second filter being directly above the turbo inlets on the Dinan setup may decrease the restriction in that area that everyone is concerned about. I would never pay for the elite intake, and I own a Dinan. At least the Dinan setup is carbon and has additional heat shields, brackets etc. AFE I crazy to want that price for a plastic mold!

Fairly easy, the hardest part is disconnecting those darn side cables, near the rear turbo air duct, attached to the stock intake.

Also just pray that the rear turbo air duct's hose clamp set horizontally. Mine was set veritically and I had to get a 4" screwdriver to loosen it. WHen loosen make sure to set it horizontally for easier access.

I only have a dyno of the Dinan CAI on my stock everything else previous 2011 e92 335i but never did a baseline without the Dinan CAI.

The Dinan CAI also has its limitation as it was not designed for boosts higher than 14-15 PSI. When you have a chance take off the cover and see how small the inlet hole you are going to be

The Dinan CAI baseline I did compared to the "average" stock baseline dynos on the N54 is about the same with the aFe stage 2 stand alone airbox in the same ambient temp range.

I will post the dyno with the Dinan numbers later this evening

My apologies. Throughout the course of reading all 5 pages I some how forgot that you traded up to an iS. I don't know how an intake can Be limited to a certain boost level when the turbo inlet pipes are the same? The only AFE units I've seen we're the original open elements. They are even smaller than the stock airbox. Any one who has removed one and tied to reinstall the stock box knows that. The stock box won't fit into the factory inlets. I've had the best luck with a heat gun to soften them up and be able to let them flex. At least the unit you're testing and the Dinan offer true cold air, which is a must IMO.
Previous dynos aren't necessary.

Time to Test The Stage 2 Elite

I just ordered the aFe snorkel kit to upgrade to the stage 2 Elite SI. I will be opening a sperate thread from this one since it is a different setup all together.

I am going to be sporting this intake for our upcoming May 6th 2012 Palm Beach International Raceway private event http://www.streetcardrags.com/

One thing for sure I will not have to worry about is the DME adapting as there is no waiting line. When ready you go and burn rubber. No hulk cars pissing on or ripping up the asphalt.

I already have the aFe air scoops, been had them on since I put in the K&N filter on the stock intake box.

Expect some results to come dialing in after May 6th 2012....later
