Misfire Ready sticky

Hey guys a bit of insight here would be much appreciated.

I have a cylinder 3 misfire only while running my procede in a performance setting ie. map 1. If I revert back to stock, the car magically runs perfect!

The car has had all injectors swapped, 3 were swapped in early January, plugs were done early February. I replaced the coilpack to cylinder 3 today and its still misfiring only while "chipped."

How can I get this car looked at while under warranty at the dealer, I cant keep the code present as I have to clear my procede prior to removal. In stock mode the code simply doesn't trip.

What gives? Seriously considering going to back to Audi tomorrow.

The reason the issue is not present stock is because you are not generating as much heat or boost.

So you say you moved the coil pack from Cyl 3 to what cylinder? And its still misfiring on 3?

How many miles on the vehicle you could potentially having gunked up intake valves or a faulty vanos too.

Another possibility is your injectors were not coded properly from whoever installed them last.

This has happened to me numerous times. It was almost always an injector. They would start going bad, but would only manifest a misfire under high boost. Very tough to get it to misfire on stock boost. Overtime, it would progressively get worse and I would be able to reproduce under any boost condition while going WOT.

The best way to get them to come is to lug the engine. Put it in 4th or maybe 5th gear and do a WOT pull from around 2-2.5k rpm. This would probably be your best shot at reproducing it at stock boost to get the misfire code.

Also, when you had your injectors replaced or whatever, was the decoupling element installed with them? I never had these installed cuz the BMW tech are idiots until I put them in with my last set of injectors. This could've been the problem all along.

Im not sure regarding the injectors, all work has been done at BMW's across the state (CT). To Jeff I replaced the coil, I didn't move it but rather replaced it. The dealer I've been going to has broke the car several time following a valve cover replacement. Injectors had a micro-leak and had to replace a fuel line. Other than that, I had 3 injectors replaced no more than 2 months ago.

I have 73k on the clock, run 11-25 maps, stage 1. I replaced the plugs 2k ago. I've only owned this car for 3k miles.

While owning this car for 3k miles, I've been to the dealer 10 times for work to be done. Seriously looking for a write off as I feel so defeated.

Just checked my 1st dealer sheet. I had all bank 2 injectors replaced cylinders 4,5,6 for random multiple cylinder misfires.

Dealer told me verbally that the first 3 injectors were replaced by the previous owner probably a year ago.

just tried bogging it in 6th gear from 1k RPM couldnt get the code to pop. Only while in chipped mode does it trigger and once I switch to stock it runs great. If I cant drive this car chipped, then Im trading it tomorrow.

worse case scenario change everything in cylinder 3 (coil pack, injector, spark plug) see if that works.

It still could be injectors despite the replacement a year ago. They could have went bad, again, or they werent coded properly.

one more thing, don't be frustrated. you'll find information on this forum that could help you debug. No ghosts Once you sort everything out the car will be a blast to drive

Try it in 4th or 5th, 6th is a little too long of a gear, you can't get to the misfire rpm without getting too high of a speed.

I'm on my 3rd set of injectors, so they can go bad within a year. Look on your service papers and see if there is a part for the decoupler. Dealers forget these all the time and they cause problems.

I know it's frustrating, truse me, I know. I have had misfires come up on over 10 different occasions and have successfully fixed it each time (although some took more sleuthing than others).

I wait for the day that the misfire bug will return from the grave, he always does, just to vex me....

Okay guys got the codes to "burn" into the ECU. 2AAF and 39CF. Can I bring it in after pulling the tune? Is the 2AAF a dead giveaway?

I only ran map 1 for 5 seconds before triggering a code.

29cf is good (misfire 3), 2aaf might not be a good idea to go into the dealership with, but I've never had experience with bringing the car in with that code.

talked to vishnu and after more research, it appears the code 2aaf will be fine. Never even went full "tune" before misfire galore, under 2 seconds in map 1 misfiring hard. Made the appointment for thursday with the SES light still on. I'll post back, also 2aaf in conjunction with a misfire code 29cf (etc) according to BMW means fuel pump and injector replacement. I'll post results thursday post "fix."

I have that same code and issue right now. I just do the power cycle to clear it. This is the 3rd time in a year and a half that I have had to deal with misfires. As said before, it will end up failing in stock boost form, and this is when I usually take it in for repair. The second time I took it in, I was told that the dealership I took it to for the first injector replacement did not install a retainer clip for the injector. Apparently it worked itself loose or something like that over a year.

I can usually replicate it in 3rd gear pull from 0mph with pedal position just before the kick down. Looking forward to seeing what fixes your ride. Good luck.

Just got back from the dealer. All bank 1 injectors went bad, performed test based on a specific tsb I've never seen before will post it later.

Verdict people throwing code 2aaf with tune, this WILL NOT VOID WARRANTY. If you remove tune prior to dealer, also went in with an FMIC and no issues, mind you its a ets 5" so a direct fit.

FYI- I do NOT have a good rep with my dealer either
