Im surprised no one said anything about the B13 Sentra Se-R (91-94).
Im also favoring the Miata, but for a 6fter I'm tight in it. Im picking up my friends 91 Se-R for $1500 next month. Throw in an SR20VE (DE engine with VVL for the cams...similar to VTEC), 187hp right there, throw some bolt ons and bam 200hp. The car already has Suspension Techniques swaybars, Hotshot header, JWT intake, and a Greddy SP exhaust. AGX Shocks and Eibach Sportlines, which will probably get ditched for Ground Controls. $1500. And the car has no rust, and runs like a champ with 135k on it. Throw 8k worth of mods to still keep it reliable (aka no boost), and that thing will run with the best. |

I did not even think about the SE-R SCC did a full writeup on the car amd the suspension on mods they did do it and it was a beast for a great price. I would also get the old boxy MR-2 before the trubo one they handle great and parts are cheap.

I would say like everyone else a Spec Miata ... best bang for the money + its RWD.
2nd choice would be eaither a S13/S14 240SX with SR20 Swap in it or a AE86. Tons of parts both RWD and both can be set up for GRIP or DRIFT (that way if your board with track days you can try your skills drifting). Personally I sold my Evo to get away from track days (jsut cost me too much $$) but I already decided Im building a dedicated track car. Im looking for a first year Elise with high miles on it in the 20-25K range and am planning on doing a STI motor swap in it. The engine weight is about the same and the STI motor stock is extreamly reliable and has tons of torque! |

* Honda Civic with a B or K series motorswap
* E30 * Porsche 944 * Miata Generally speaking $10k doesn't get you a class leading 'spec' car. I don't care what series you run (spec miata, spec 944, honda challenge, etc.). $10k gets you in the door with a well prepped car, I've heard from many of our local 944 racers that $20k is a more realistic figure to have a really well prepped car that is capable of winning your class. I'm biased to the honda/acura platform since that's what I've learned to drive on and have the most track miles on. As long as you leave the motor swaps relatively close to stock they're extremely reliable and cheap to maintain. 190 whp in a car that weighs 2100 lbs. is fun....regardless of which set of wheels is driving the car. |
