Wiping the tears from my eyes ... Ne'er a truer word spoken.

How is it the council's fault, Carl ? You've continually said you don't drive like a "granny", battering around everywhere. You're tarred with your own brush.

And did you bother getting your car aligned after the last wheel wreck ?

If you don't stop dithering in choosing which chip upgrade to get (EVEN after freely dishing out your opinions on it then receiving all the patient replies in this Forum from those with first hand knowledge, you pause, blink a few times and go ask it yet AGAIN Here and Here) - you'll be lucky if you have any round wheels remaining ....

HOW, because mate has known about the pot hole and they keep filling it only for it to break up again.

so thats an admission its there fault already...

If i had seen it i would have swerved. It was 6am pitch black and the hole full of water.

just wallop.. luckuy i wasnt caining it this particular time.

Go sell your 335d and escort and get a kia or something. You obviously never drive above the speed limit.

It is not their fault if you come flying down the road and (yet again) get caught out by the unexpected. With experience you learn what to look for rather than blindly relying that everything and everybody will be driving as you expect. That is why there are speed limits. But with you it appears it will take some considerable time to pass the daft wee boyness phase.

Why would I need a Kia ? That can break the speed limit too ... or did you not think that through ?

Picked your tuning company yet ?

squeeze, you do hardly any miles in your bmw tho do you.

One i caught a curb protector which was sticking out, but then again i was close to it. This one is the councils fault.
Carlos, i was doing about 40k a year in an M3 whilst you were still playing in your Fords, and never managed to trash any wheels
i am now lucky enough to have a choice of motors to drive if that makes a difference

Never trashed a wheel through my own fault either.

Carlos, it's a conspiracy by the government to make us all slow down and keep the alloy wheel industry alive.

Or the council/highways agency can't be arsed to fix the roads as we all might actually enjoy driving on our shite roads. Either way, it's hard to claim damage to your car, much easier if you've tripped and fallen on a pavement. All seems to boil down to injuries to the person are deemed more important than damage to vehicles/possessions. Sick I know.

Go to the tyre place first and check the balancing.

The impact could have knocked a weight of the wheel or slightly distorted the tyre. The tyre place may also be able to check your alignment.

If you have to go to the dealer. Try this multiple choice as to what to tell them:

1. You hit a pothole and want to have the car checked out

2. You secretly love the receptionist at the dealer and want to take her away for a naughty weekend at a country house hotel.

3. You are an impoverished trainee lap dancer and have not been able to earn any money as the operation has been unsuccessful.

Personal Injury claims have spiralled out of control. There was a severe bus accident in west midlands last year, and a woman tried to sue the bus company for whiplash. Further on-board CCTV investigation by travelWM revealed that she wasnt even on the bus. Makes me sick!

I bent 2 wheels last year (2007) when I hit a pothole, and that's the first time in more than 20 years. My theory is that a) the state of British roads is worse than ever before, in terms of poor maintenance, so there are more and bigger potholes, and b) bl**dy run-flat tyre walls don't deform to absorb the shock so most of the force is transmitted to the alloy wheels. Perhaps it doesn't help having a wide 5-spoke design and low-profile tyres, but both my front and back wheels were buckled.

Now I'm on non-runflats, I think I have a bit more chance of surviving another pothole, but I am extra careful to steer around them (admittedly v.diffcult at night in the rain).

I agree with NFS, take the car to your local tyre centre, tell them what happened, and they can take a look - could be just balancing (if you're really lucky). If the wheel is bent they can show you by putting it up on the machine and spinning it. Then it's time for a new rim...

I suggest you steer clear of option 3, especially if you have a wobble in your steering.

There was an article in MCN stating that they were going to increase the depth of pothole that would be immediately fixed from 2" to 3". Several councils have started this policy already.

I guess it's just gonna keep getting worse.

I hit a pothole about 2 months after i had got my new 3 series. The result was a alloy wheel that was stuffed ( only found out when they took the tyre off ) and a brand new tyre. The bill was something like £500 and i had to take a day off work to sort it out.

Rang my local council and put a claim in. Took photos of the pothole and i kept the damaged alloy wheel and tyre as evidence. Sent in my claim form saying it was there bloody fault with the photos and explained it was the main route into the city centre and that it was also very dangerous.

About 3 months later got a cheque for the full amount.

I've still got the buckled alloy wheel which actually looks mint . Do you think its worth any money on flea bay ?

Seriously, what's the situation regarding railway crossings?

There's one near me & the road-to-rail alignment is ...er.. a risk to the car's suspension.

Carlos, you of all people must have some relevant information on this subject?

I've reported some potholes near me and they have been filled in within 24hrs. That's after three months of being left with gravel as filler!

The roads are definately getting worse, I accidently drove over someone's silencer tailpipe (must have fell of some Ford Cortina/Fiesta Vx Nova et al)

Just heard a massive bang and seen it fly off onto the curb at 40mph. Luckily I couldn't see any damage when I pulled up to check.

Carlos, sounds like you have damaged your rim and you need to get it checked out asap for saftey. I agree the roads are crappy at the moment and in around the SE they are more like Eastern Europe! To think that we pay the most tax, fuel is 110p a litre and we have roads like this is rubbish.

I have the 18" alloys and although runflats are ok 95% of the time when you hit a big hole or raised drain cover it just shakes the car and feels out of context and worse than the obstacle. That is where run flats suffer and I guess the 19"s are even worse.

Get the checks done at BMW dealer or a tyre centre. If there is a problem you have to get the rim rebalanced or new rim. Then get your facts together and go for the council. I have had a couple of instances over the last few weeks where I thought the tyre / wheel / suspension was going to be damanged at night in the dark and nothing I could do about it.

Good luck I hope you get it sorted soon. I think we will all need rally cars in a few years to drive fast on uk roads with settings for a welsh stage of the RAC.
