Thanks this helped huge. But why is it that the homelink buttons only work when the car is on (power on)? I like to get in my car then open the garage then start it sometimes...but I guess I'll have to adjust unless there's a fix around this

New openers...had to do this again. Sweet spot to point your opener at is the right side of the mirror.

And with some of the new openers, you'll need to repeatedly press the button rather than just holding it down.

Well Done!

Well done. It's amazing that the book leaves out the complete steps.

I did experience something that I can't explain just yet though. I was able to program my gate before the garage doors. But when starting the process for the garage doors I erased everything and now I have not been able to reprogram the gate. I will have to try again.

If we could just get you to write a quick synopsis of the iDrive system.

Yet another satisfied customer! Thanks to all for the great info.

I've never been so geeked out about a car as to surf discussion boards like this. E90 and Bimmerfest have been so useful when I was shopping for my car and even more so in the two weeks since I drove off the lot. Count me among the converted.

Thank you to the "author" of this "how to thread." My wife just got a new 535i and I attempted to program the garage door. After reading the owners manual for programming the garage door, I tried it and was unsuccessful. After reading this post and following the step-by-step instructions, I was able to program it on my 1st try. Thank you

The door will definitely operate, but all u need to do is improvise = press the door opener once more to stop it from closing.

Thanks for posting this.

I tried and tried and tried. Spent about 1.5 hours over two days.

After reading this, it took me less than 5 minutes from start to finish to program my garage door remote.
