Installed Sirius got more than I bargained for
I got a Sirius unit from Tischer and installed it this week. Took the car to the dealer for the software install and got a little bonus. After the 4.5 hour data update and another couple of hours of them correcting my mistake in setting up the fiberoptic connections it was done. I jumped in the car and as I was driving away I noticed that my I-Drive screen looked different. As I looked through the menus I discovered many changes beyond just the graphics. I have a 2006 330i that has a build date in April of 06 so the graphics and menus were pretty basic. I really like the fact that BMW continually does little upgrades like this. Most companies don't bother.

Yea that is why the software update takes so long. Any update you do to the car in regards to the software actually updates the entire car.
I had mine updated once in 08 because they had to put in the new seat airbag sensor and that changed iDrive and adds some nice options that we didnt have in 06. I had it updated again when I added sirius, but that really didnt change much, it just moved a bit faster. You now have a timed ventilation setting that you can use in the summer to briefly cool the car down before you get into it. You can hit the Aux and Sat now from the button on the steering wheel (before for some reason it would not cycle to aux). If you go into the communications settings, when you are on a call there is now a keypad on the bottom of the screen so you can dial digits during calls. The color changes are there, and there is a profile section. I forget whatelse it adds but its a nice little bonus.

Can you get upgrades like that even if you don't "need" them to make a new component work properly?

Thanks for all of the info. I now know where to look for some more changes. My car had been in several times for various services but I guess they don't do the whole update unless they change a component that requires it. I have a buddy that has a early build 06 that I am sure will want these updates so I will post what his dealer has to say about just doing the update. Tom |

Did the SA suggest it ? If so you have a good SA, mine never offered any update. It seems like they should be doing these updates on a regular basis.

I think their policy is to not update anything unless there is something wrong or something is added/replaced that needs programming.
