BMW - Condition Based Servicing (CBS)

This CBS thing has got to be bullsh*t does it not??

Car has build date of June 2010 and has 12k on clock.

I thought, well as it is now 12mths old the oil and filter will be ready for a change and let's get some nice fresh goodness circulating around the car.

Checked the CBS out of curiousity, WTF!! - oil service due in July 2012 or... in 17,000kms -- are BMW seriously expecting that we will run oil in our turbo cars for 2 years or 29,000kms without an oil change!!??

Thoughts?

Yeh, BMW recommends an oil change every 30,000km or when every 2nd service is due. IMO it's pretty ridiculous letting oil sludge around in the car for that long so I always change a lot more often than that, usually about 7,500km. Mind you, running a tune probably warrants that.

I'd recommend every 15,000km MAX. However, my dad does whatever the CBS tells him to do and his BMWs have never had a problem.

BMW engineers aren't idiots and CBS obviously works and if you simply follow CBS then BMW can't really blame you for any problems anyway..

However as a low km driver I also doubt some of the CBS intervals.

Same thing when i called the bmw dearler from Brisbane, they were like ya man Bmw diesel is amazing which can last 2yrs or 30k. But few mechanic said its best to change around 15k max to prolong your engine crap so i would advice to do it every year.

Considering you're running more that stock power it's highly recommended you change a lot more often.

30,000kms without an oil change.... unbelievable - what are they thinking..!!??

However it does raise the question, if you get an Indy to change the oil and filter (approved bmw gear).... should they reset the service indicator, or simply do the change and leave it as is... reporting that it needs to be done in July 2012?

If BMW state that a car MUST be maintained to THEIR specs to avoid warranty rejections... surely if the oil has been changed outside of approved timings, this would be reason for them to say.. "sorry, we told you when you had to change your oil - but you ignored bmw spec, therefore you have voided your warranty"??

By law, BMW is not allowed to force you to perform services at the dealership in order to keep your warranty. As long as you do it at a reputable indy workshop and they perform logbook services, BMW has no right to deny any warranty claim.

If you want to go back to BMW every 15,000km to perform scheduled service (I do, since my services are free) then leave the CBS alone. It means I get a free oil change every 30,000km. Just get the oil change done in the interim at whatever interval you like with your indy.

There is no way BMW can void your warranty for performing ADDITIONAL oil changes unless the workshop you take it to seriously fucks something up, like pour nails into your oil sump. Many people do their own oil changes every 7,500km. How the hell are they supposed to prove you did an oil change in between anyway?

"Sir, we just did an oil analysis. The oil in your car is a lot better than the black, polluted sludge we expected after 30,000km. Your warranty is void" ==> You can see how ridiculous this is. NEVER will happen.

Exactly.

I took my BMW to my family mechanic when it was sitting around 30K because BMW refused to do an oil change.

Picked up the car and my mechanic basically said that they didn't even change the oil filter on the 1st service. So much residue had built up in the oil filter it almost collapsed from it's own weight. He said he had the hardest time getting the oil filter out and it was lucky I brought it in - otherwise it would have caused some problems.

Yes

Every 7500-10,000KM = New Oil & Oil Filter
Every 12 Months = New Brake Fluid
Every 24 Months / 20,000km = New Coolant & Transmission Fluid

That would probably be quite difficult to expain that to the customer.

IMO, doing oil changes at 30,000km in a brand new car means you consider the car as being disposable and will probably trade it in soon anyway. This type of BS is a big turn off for me if buying a used BMW.

Yep every 2 years, my light has just come on saying it's needing a change.

I have some new Pads, cross drilled and slotted rotors and S/S lines to install so will do the flush at the same time. Just trying to work out if I do it myself (can do the pads & rotors, not sure about the flush) or bite the bullet and get Steve over to do it for me.

CBS is rather approximate - you may find it starts counting down quicker. Mine (325i) ended up asking for new oil after 21,000km and a further 22,000km but I'd done a change in between anyway.

Unfortunately a lot of people don't care for their vehicle's longevity. The lower the number of services possible (equating to less money spent on maintenance) the better.

BMW uses some sort of BMW-spec synthetic oil with a longer life than standard synthetic oil. Synthetic oil is again longer life than normal mineral oil.

The usual CBS service interval on a diesel is 30,000km. If you were to think "oooh I'll do a break-in oil change at 2000km" and use minearl oil with a shorter lifespan, then that would be WORSE than if you just left the BMW synthetic oil in there for the whole 30000km.

I'm pretty sure CBS bases it's reading on the amount of fuel consumed, rather than time or distance travelled...with my e46 M3, It would count down from 25,000kms but it ran down to 0 after about 10-12,000kms every time...

Just buy a 'premium used' car from a BMW dealer...I got a three year warranty/free scheduled servicing/roadside assist thrown in (usually 12 months for all)

There's nothing special about the oil they use. For diesels it's LL-04 oil, any oil that meets that spec should be fully synthetic.

Don't believe the bullshit dealers say about "oohhhhhh we use a specially designed oil that only we have since we extract it from the magnetic north pole of Mars! You must come to us for service or your engine will grenade!"

There's no problem with doing your own oil change and most of the time you can buy oil that is BETTER than what they use.

Track your car?? Drive it hard??

Change the fluids.. simple! Talk to any truck driver, private fleet, racing company etc.. none of them will leave the standard fluids in their vehicles for the manufactures recommended period.

What you do is up to you.. There are plenty of people who leave their brake pads on the car until they are on the backing plate.. and the tyres on until they are semi's, for me, for the sake of a few hundred dollars a year, I'll work on the safe side, especially with a modified car, its cheap insurance.

Each to their own I guess
