Smile Upgrading stereo. 3 series MB quart kit ordered.

Hi everyone, first post.

Ordered MB quart speakers at a decent price, hopefully it'll be an improvement.

Bought my car a few days ago, no Bluetooth or wiring prep so I'll probably go aftermarket, dynavin, pioneer carplay?

Thanks to all the contributors here. Lots of useful information to read through.

Speakers have arrived, gosh, tiny magnets?

Anyhow.

Really want to keep the original head unit....but.

.... the more I read about re-coding to HiFi, to get a flat sound for an external amp, getting Bluetooth streaming and hands-free phone to work, the more I'm inclined to throw the unit out the window.

Turning into a frustrating adventure.

Yes.. It seems to be.
Easy to make a costly mistake and potentially still end up with a terrible sound

Newkid here. Am in a similar position and considering options about upgrading my car too.

Is re-coding to hifi essential? Can DSP's get you to the same place, or maybe even better?

New kid too.

I have no idea, but...

The Bavsound stage 1 kit is made for our cars that haven't got the tweeter in the door pillar.

In their YouTube video, there's no mention of having to do anything to the stereo, so I'm hoping the speakers I've bought should be the same, just plug and go.

Unless of course bavsound have "detuned" their speakers to compensate for the over
eq-ued basic systems.

Luckily the MB quart have a 3 or 6db cutoff in the crossover in case the tweeter is too loud.

I'll fit the door speakers today and report back.

Door speakers done. Huge improvement, however it does sound as though some processing is going on from the head unit. Had to cut back the tweeters to -6db. Ok for now.

Will fit the under seat woofers tomorrow, and may install a small monoblock amp to drive them separately.

Well, she's up and running.

Huge improvement already and haven't even fitted the under seat subs and rear shelf speakers.

Completely plug and go without having to cut any of the original wiring.

When fitting the front speakers, I
destroyed the original speakers so that I can use the female connector to avoid cutting the factory loom.
I'll safely store all the original stuff and buy a pair of original cheap speakers off eBay in case the next owner wants to revert to stock.

I'll put it all back together once I'm clear in my mind where to route the usb cables, possibly install rear camera, or underseat woofer amp etc.

It seems to me to have been an advantage having the basic stereo. The unit that came out was really low level quality and as much as I would have liked to have stayed stock, glad it's out.

Worst part of the job... trying to find a home for the permanently live yellow wire (fuse 83). Nightmare.

Anyone attempting this, take your glove box out!!!! Before you start.
Cheers.

I too started out with base audio, couldn't be happier to put in my pioneer avic. Extra functions plus amp-ready (with more flexible EQ and crossover points)

I've got a 3-way e90 kit up front, and a sub in the boot. World of a difference!!

Hi Ali, yes. Love it. The eq settings and setup options are great.

So I'm having beans on toast at a cafe, and the audio shop are installing a monoblock for the underseat woofers.

They'll make all the connections to the battery(wasn't prepared to do this myself), and analogue inputs from the head woofer pre amp outs.

They'll run the speaker leads to the seats and I'll connect and terminate when I've swapped the woofers.

Oh,...and a rear view camera since he's runnng the wiring.

I think that'll be it for me.

Looking good Rialas!

I have today decided on the following, all to be installed professionally :

1. Focal 100KRS components,
2. Earthquake SWS8's,
3. JL Audio 500/3,
4. Audison Bit Ten

Auditioned the above today, and its seriously good. The Bit Ten in particular pulls everything together and puts the singer on the top of the dashboard.

Can't wait!!! Just need to save a stack to achieve it! Booked for the third week in November

Good luck jk, hope you'll be happy with the new kit.

My amp's installed now but will run it hopefully tomorrow when the underseats are installed. They did a tidy job.

I have the same MB kit but haven't installed it yet. How did you connect it to the factory wiring? I don't want to splice into mine :/

Hi db
I cut the original speakers with a hacksaw and soldered the wire from the mb crossover onto those male sockets which then plugged into the loom.

But must admit if I were to do this again, I'd snip the original connector off (a few centimetres back so you can re-use if necessary) and use connectors to connect the crossover wire (like in the pic).

Thanks, they sound beasty. Lol.

They're free standing (and rattling) at the moment until I decide how to secure them. Possibly try and use the same or similar glue as bmw use, or spacer as others have done.

I think i've read about draught excluder being used. You might want to research that.

Its cheap and readily available, as well as easily removed if needed. Are any spacers required so the drivers dont hit anything. Might want to check that too, as thats a bad thing and will need addressing asap
