Oh infact it's for the license plate actually. Look at the pics...

The first car must be a pre-production because there's an indented area where the plate is mounted while the second car doesn't have it. Looks like the second pic is the mount, whereas the first pic has that ugly "valley" area for the plate (and if you had a plate delete it would look seriously ugly).

i have to say, MB's facelift of the SL in general is one of the better examples out there.
i never liked the old face... but am in love with the facelift.
