Well, I'm no physcologist (and I'm a middle child, so I'm meant to be the most f*cked up) but I'd say make time specifically for number one son, so he doesn't feel perturbed by no 2's arrival.
Maybe get him a little gift and say its from his little brother? Try and involve him as much as you can. Then again I have a dog and no kids so maybe my advice is rubbish!!

Woo hoo - congratulations!
Sheps advice is sound even if he has no kids. Wife currently trying to put our squawking 3 month old to sleep - not easy! |

Though I've no experience of two just yet (roll on September ) the plan of involving your no1 Son as much as possible seems to be the route I'd take. Rewards for helping take care of his little Brother (as opposed to out-right gifts) is an idea too. My Daughter does anything you ask if there's a sticker at the end of it (bless ) so maybe something like a sticker-book where he can collect things along the way. Inexpensive for you and something you can all be involved in.

The effect the new arrival can have on a sibling is interesting. Our daughter had just turned 2 when little brother arrived. She was really keen and into him but in the first couple of weeks after he cam home she slept until 11.30 - noon and we often had to waken her at that stage. She normally before that was always up at 7 and reverted back to that pattern after the first couple of weeks but the emotions of it all must have totally knackered her.

Our 2.5 year old is being very good with the baby girl. We have to watch him to make sure he doesn't get over enthusiastic in his "entertaining" but overall, can't fault the fella.
We use the "involve him and only be positive" route. Start telling them off especially when it involves the baby and resentment kicks in. Seen some older siblings being total nightmares with new brothers or sisters. |
