The second pictures is the valve which operates similar to a wastegate, vaccum/pressure driven to open at a certain point. This allows it to have backpressure when needed and have more flow when it is needed.


The second pic I have no idea about. Can you take a less zoomed in picture to give it some more perspective?

the valve will close when the car is cold to help aid the engine get warmer faster.

I'm pretty sure its pressure and not temperature regulated.

pressure regulated flap yes, but I still believe that it is used for the warming of the engine and exhaust gasses (creates lower emissions) and is controlled by the engine temp.
