To be honest though, I would strongly consider a DB9 or Maserati in that price range.
They are works of art, and definitely head turners, and not that unreliable. I would just stare at that maserati all day if I owned it

lol yea but I'd look like the biggest d-bag getting out of a DB9, Maserati, or gallardo at my age. Especially since I'd be driving it to my campus. Also, no one daily drives 6-8 year old gallardos lol

Yea I was thinking about that. I think p-cars are the way to go for the all around package.

exactly why I don't want one of those

I dunno, I've been thinking recently that the M3 doesn't really even compete with the others imo. I see way too many of them, my e92 is faster than one and looks pretty similar, I don't want to mod it and imo it only looks good heavily modded. So the M3 is pretty much just a really big backup i guess

lol all good points and that is definitely helping me make my decision

lol well i dunno. The exterior of the CTS-V doesn't really do it for me and it isn't really that fast for having 550hp.

like I said above, the M3 doesn't really compare to the others I'm listing, that is purely a bmw fanboy comment. I think I'm crossing the M3 off my list. It's way too similar to my current car.

I am planning to buy, but I am going to put $20k cash down and finance the rest. Who pays $80k cash when they buy a car?? especially someone that's still a student.

M3, Boxter or GT-R, but that GT-R sure is busy inside. I'd go with the M3, but then I'm probably a good deal older than you; therefore, I prefer the relative understatement of the M3. But if boy-racer is what you want, and you said you are young so that seemingly fits, the GT-R would be the one to get.

Are Porsche's really that reliable? I haven't any friends who'd say that about theirs.

Also, as you're in NJ, I don't think any of the cars you'd consider owning will turn many heads, aside from the dynamic of their price and your youth, as there are plenty of each in your area. It's not like poverty reigns in the DC/NYC corridor.

I agree with Dubbedown. I would save the $ and invest it somewhere else. You are driving a nice car anyway. Why drive a nicer car to campus, if someone envies you, may ding or scratch it??

I'm pretty sure Porsches are pretty reliable for how much they cost. Also, I live in central NJ where the cars are relatively understated compared to the north jersey/NYC atmosphere, so I'm not worried about that part. You never see exotics by where I live (princeton area)

rac1 is right, a 20k down payment is not enough. Even spread over 5 years you're looking at monthly payments of over $1100 (not to mention insurance). This assumes a 4% borrowing rate which is being optimistic given your age and car choice. Have you really thought this through?
I actually have really thought this through. I wouldn't be asking the question if I didn't. I'd prefer a balloon finance like bmw select or mercedes's balloon finance system, but I can swing a payment of ~$800-900 a month if not, but I'd prefer a $700 payment (which is what a 60 month bmw select payment would be based off of a $80,000 car with $16,000 down). I'd probably put it in my father's name for a lower interest rate and if I do a traditional finance and I'd try to get a term more like 72 months or 84 months to stretch it out a bit (which would be ~$800 a month for 84 months based off a 3.5% rate on a $80k car with $20k down).

I don't think you know what you're talking about. Do you know what a balloon finance even is? Considering both my cars are BMW select financed, I think I know what I'm talking about.

I'll give you an example: the msrp on my 335 was 52k. I put down 9k and did a 60 month BMW select. I pay $499 a month and then have a $16k balloon payment at the end. But I'm going to get rid of it with ~18 months left and make my downpayment back.

Also, I'd get rid of the car way before 84 months are up, so I won't even be seeing those payments or depreciation based off the traditional finance.

I don't think YOU thought this through

I would pick the m3 as well, but the boxster is one hell of a car. Most professional drivers/testers/journalists will tell you that it is in fact one of the only true daily drivers with pure driving dynamics. If you are looking at figures like hp it may be underpowered in comparison to other cars but the power to weight ratio and overall driving dynamics are way beyond some of the other cars mentioned. That said, I wouldn’t want to own one, as I like bimmers and only bimmers, but it is for sure a great car in terms of handling over raw power.

i would say the opposite, most people will say they are not. and as a rule of thumb, the more the car costs, the more it has that can break, not the other way around.

Without getting into discussing financing in the anonymous vacuum of the internet, the notion that you are "buying" a depreciating asset by actually purchasing approximately 25% of the equity at the time of contract is a logistical fallacy.

What you are really doing is playing with OPM

Buying is walking in with a certified check drawn on the account of the prospective title holder or one of his entities and walking out with free and clear title. If that's not what you're doing, you're not buying.

The only exception to the rule about playing with OPM is leasing through a business. But that's another discussion and moot as far as this thread is concerned because you are a student.
