good question. I wanna know too.

My guess would be that they're only covered under "normal" driving (i.e. no track, etc.)

Wear

Unless the car has severe and obvious signs of track use and/or abuse, they will replace the pads.
That's the deal- you pays the money and they pays the maintenance.
I have no dealer experience, so maybe there are people who know better, but I think I'm correct.

I remember reading on another thread that someone tried to get there brakes service and was told that they weren't worn down enough to change. So I’m pretty sure they go by wear.

You are correct. I SPECIFICALLY asked my service rep this question and he told me "3mm..." thats how much pad has to be left for them to change the pad. I know seem kinda low to me but that is what he said.

I heard from a friend who owned a 330ci, M3, and an M6 that they probably will NOT change the pads or do anything prematurely even if metal rubs against metal and your entire pad is gone.
might just be the dealer tho, but i would not count on it

The brake has an indicator that tells you when you need to get your brake service unless the indicator malfunction.

Not sure about track questions on brake.

my friend had a z4 and they refused to replace the pads when he was still under maintenance, not long later when he took the car in for service they said he needs to change the pads and rotors and his maintenance had just passed so he had to pay like $700.

Yep, pads have to be down to 3.0 mm or the lining light has to be on. If neither is the case BMW will not pay the dealer for the brakes. They will also cover the brakes if the car has abnormally low mileage for brake repairs......once. If you come in at 15K miles needing brakes okay, but come back in another 10-15K miles needing the same brakes again..........somethings up and probably won't be covered.
