What do you guys think of the 08+ STi?

Have any of you guys driven/own 08+ STi? What were your impressions? Compared to a 335?

Any known issues? Heard minor issues like cold start 2nd gear, rattling of the trunk cover...anything else?

I was thinking about picking one up, but wanted to get some input before I go do the test drive.

I've check the STi forums, but obviously biased towards STi being the best car out there.

'09 WRXs (not STi) seem to have very similar acceleration numbers. just throwin' that out there.

Motor Trend got one to go 0-60 in 4.8 seconds. I'd save a couple grand and get the WRX.

Yeah the 09 WRX got a new turbo giving it ~270 hp i think. If you just tune the suspension and stuff, it is a better buy for you money. The STI nowadays is 35-43k which isn't what it's supposed to be in my opinion. Sure it looks more aggressive, but that can also be fixed with aftermarket parts. In that market, you should have absolutely no trouble finding used or new aftermarket parts

With the Subaru, you WILL get rattles and stuff every so often because it's not built like the 335i. It's hard to compare it to the 335i in anything except some performance things.

Umm i drove one . As fast as they look on paper motor trend, car and driver , etc. To me it didn't give me that brutal grunt i was expecting. It was definitely quick but i don't know just not that exciting to me. Doesn't sound that great either. Reguardless you should drive it to see for yourself . But um styling wise IMO i like the look of the 07's much more. O0O almost forgot , definitely overpriced.

I got a $50 gift car for test driving a Subaru, So of course it was worth it to get payed to test drive an STI. I have to agree with you, It is much more laggy, lacks the quality of the BMW, and is simply not worth almost $40k...It is worth maybe $30k tops, but the quality is not of a car in the price range they are asking...

Please provide reasoning on why it's a POS? Just wanted to get your feedback on it.

I was thinking about getting the EVO X, but interior looks cheaper than STi and trunk space sucks.

I like:

-Practicalilty of a hatchback (can fit a lot)
-AWD
-Interior better than X
-I snowboard alot so I can take it up to the snow w/o having to have a SUV
-I actually like the looks of it
-tunibility add less than $5K worth of mods to be around 350 rwhp/ 350 rwtq
-Right now can be had from high $20K to low $30K
-Will take to the track a few times a year for auto crossing
-If I damage it parts wont cost as much as Beamer
-as far as my knowledge pretty reliable (correct me if I'm wrong)

Hatchback may be practical but it reduces structural rigidity which causes it to twist noticeably on track (according to C&D and other sources)
-AWD is similar to evo but handling goes to evoX
-doesn't feel as attached to the road
-lots of oversteer
-can't take neither to snow pile unless you have a dedicated winter tire
-INITIAL tunability is just as good as evoX
-I wonder why they're so cheap compared to evoX?
-They will do horrible at autocross compared to evoX

If you don't plan on enjoying its performance aspect which the car was originally made for, you should do just fine with the subaru. When it comes down these kind of cars, I couldn't care less about trunk space and interior.

To each to his own

Theres a lot of bashing on the 08+ sti, but honestly I like it. It's obviously geared toward a more practical daily driver, with plenty of utility. The ride is a lot softer and there is more body roll than I'd like, but that's nothing a couple suspension mods could fix.

There was some major discounting going on the 08 sti models a couple months ago, not sure if it's still going on but they can be had for 6-8k off. It's true the 09 wrx throws down very similar performance figures compared to the STI, but in the end the STI has more potential and looks a ton better. I can't get over how crappy the wrxs look now.

Obviously the STI is not as hardcore as it was before but it's still a good car and I think for your purposes it suits your needs.

Former Sti's could "almost" hang with evo's. Current Sti is just a fast family car.

My friend who goes to the track a lot will tell you the STi is a much better performer than the WRX; and yes, he's driven both.

Personally I like the hatchback; all the championship winning WRC cars of recent years were hatchbacks.

Priced the same I’d take the Evo over the STI, tiny bit slower in s straight line but a better overall performer. I was able to get a STI when they had the $8k off MSRP and 0% for 63m so that made it worth it to me. If I had gotten the same deal on an EVO MR I would have taken that even with the utility hit (more for styling and the dual clutch than anything else).

It takes all of a grand to significantly improve the STI you just need the following:

Cobb Accessport with a stage 1 map - $695
Whiteline 24mm front sway - $195
Whiteline 22mm rear sway - $175
Whiteline steering rack bushings $65
Alignment – depends on the shop

This will put you at 340hp/345tq if you have access to 93 octane and tighten the steering response and turn in while reducing understeer and bodyroll by a lot. Add a turboback for $1500 and a custom tune and you can probably get another 40hp/50tq.

If you are looking for something to go nuts on it’s probably best to go with a base Evo GSR and mod from there. The old iron block motor was bulletproof and so far the new one seems to be holding up well.

If you want fast and functional I’d say go with the STI, you can pack a lot of stuff in there.

Don’t mind Gator, he’s a Z driver so hates anything with more than 2 doors.

Thanks for helpful info

Do you need to upgrade the turbo in order to get 400 rwhp/ 400 rwtq on 91 oct w/o meth?

I just really like the "utility" in this car and seems like a fun little car to drive.
