Hrm,
There's a post on PH about this, apparently it's also a problem on the 1-Series. There's also someone suggesting that the part that is causing the problem is also used on VAG cars and they've had issues too. Man, I am getting closer and closer to pulling the trigger on an E92 but this issue keeps rearing it's ugly head and keeps holding me back... Surely a recall is in order? Can we get some official comment from BMW on this? /looks over in Darrend Edwards' direction... EDIT: Here's the PH thread: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/t...ies/3%20series Last edited by toxicnerve; 10-13-2009 at 04:57 PM.. |

BMW will not comment/Nor will Darren - and even if they did they would deny any problem.
Bit like the various MINI issues!

It's difficult to gauge the situation via the internet. Internet forums/views are severely skewed by the fact that generally it's those who have problems who post and are most vocal about it. The other 99% of people who have not had any issues tend to be much quieter about their experiences. Having said all that, the fact that this issue keeps popping up on various sites is quite worrying. Especially when it is occurring at (in some cases) fairly low mileage levels. |

Hi
Continental Teves MK60 unit is the DSC unit at fault. VAG group, (Audi,Seat,VW,Skoda) use the same component and are having similar failures. None of these manufacturers are recalling cars. I suspect we need letters to Watchdog or other motoring mags. |

Hi All,
I'm having the same problem as most of you, Purchased my BMW 320D auto 05 (currently 48K) from main dealer less than 2 years ago, warranty ran out in Jan 09…which my mistake I didn’t renew DSC light came on, booked it in to main dealer explained which lights were on. Went into drop the car off, was told they would charge £125+VAT for diagnosing the problem, and then let me know the cost of fixing it. Not really sure why as much £125 as the lights should already tell them what the problem is, and surly it shouldn’t take a whole day(£125 days labour) to diagnose what the problem is. Thought ok wont argue too much hopefully it wont to costly to sort the prob out. Yep very naïve….when the rang me up to tell me what the problem was and how much it was going to cost….nearly fell through the floor! Gutted, so wasn’t what to do, as I only thought it needed a service which it went in for. Was usual story of goodwill gesture….in my case they would knock of 80% of part only….. So the cost to me would be around £750(inclusive, part, labor, reprogramming, vat)….this on top of the £125+vat already paid for plugging in a computer and reading what it tells em(apparently a days work) Told them will think about it as service cost me over £400, and also told will need 4 new tires soon….. Looking on this forum the goodwill seems to vary person to person……so wanted to ask if others think this is reasonable? Thanks, Disgruntled BMW driver p.s every time i go into BMW I feel like I’ve been ripped off! |

DSC failure 320d
I bought 56 plate from well known dealer in north glasgow January 2008
DSC warning light came on last week - the car was 4 weeks out of warranty!! After reading posts here I was not entirely sure how much the repair would cost but unbelievably, the dealer offered the repair FREE OF CHARGE - otherwise a £1700 bill was on the way - phew! Well done North Glasgow BMW dealer (DglPrk) - you know who you are! Thought I was going to be ripped off but...Couldn't recommend them highly enough |

My car is one year old and the DSC unit "failed" twice already. In both cases there were minor issued; that's why I've concluded there are A LOT of reasons that could cause the DSC to fail. I think that rarely there is a case when the actual unit fails completely.

I expect you will get a 100% parts contribution, maybe even a little labour too.

I get the impression they think of a number and double it, see what the reaction of the customer is.

If it's true that this is a common part between BMW and VAG cars and they are both having issues with a high rate of a failures a recall should be issued. |

This does seem to be a common problem. My hydraulic unit and ecu on 06 sport was changed a month or so ago but i was on extended warranty so only paid my excess.
By the way "us_abm" £125 represents an hour not a days labour for your diagnosis.

[QUOTE=bmwkong;6166739]toxicnerve and rocketron, thanks for your replies. I totally agree and maybe I should have taken out the extended warranty. Though I was never contacted about taking it out when the 3 years expired and I forgot to follow it up.
Anyway I have now picked the car up and all appears to be resolved. A full software update was carried out and the final bill came to £370 all in, including diagnostics. All in all its not a bad ending I guess. Only 1 thing I noticed after leaving the dealers is my service remaining is now 4000miles whereas before it was 10000miles ??? Should I question this?[/QU may sound like daft question but they havent by any chance been on a 6000 mile joy ride in it have they?? |

I wonder if they were "testing" it after the parts were replaced to ensure the DSC/DTC etc was all working correctly...
If they were doing a "real world" test of this it would involve spanking the sh*t out of the car to see if the electronics stepped in to recover any slide. This driving style would quickly see a reduction in the service interval... I personally would raise it but that's from a laymans point of view. |

Well you'll certainly get 100% parts goodwill.
But you have extended warranty? Should all be covered then?

Just had this at 42k on a 2006 56 plate 320d. Dealer has diagnosed it over the phone(!) and sounded pretty familiar with the fault.
I only bought the car 4 days ago as a BMW Approved Used Car so imagine it will be covered by warranty. Sympathise with all you guys - this definitely seems a common problem and spoils the ownership of such a great machine. |
