Exclamation 335i - Clear Coat Gone?!

Hey guys,

I have a 07' 335i with 19k miles. I just recently noticed that a piece of clear coat(about the size of a quarter) is missing on top of my roof; actually, I think it is clear coat that's missing because I cannot wipe it off.

I almost always have my car covered under a garage and have not driven it much. Only thing I can think of is bird poop?

My car is still covered under warranty and I'm going to take it in to see what they can do.

Does anybody how this could have happened? And the likelihood it will be covered under warranty?

if it's clear coat, you will be able to feel the changes in height from non clear to clear. If you don't feel any variations in height, then you aren't missing clear coat.

I do feel that the texture is different from that area and the rest but I'm not noticing a significant difference in height.

I would need to see a better pic do give my full thought of what this is but it could be 1 of 2 things.

1. Sever water etching/watermark backed in the sun

2. Bird crap baked in the sun and when you cleaned it ,it seemed like nothing but it did in fact screw up the paint

I'm guessing it's a stain of some kind and not clear coat failure, but it's tough to tell by that picture.

Excellent.

You'll know clear coat failure. It looks really, really bad, and is obvious, like bubbling and flaking off of the outer coating. What you had was minor etching, and if you use a bright light source, you'll find a lot of that over the years you own a daily driver. That's the type of thing we polish out all the time (as you discovered by using Scratch-X). Nothing to get too worked up about.
