Buying? Newbie
Hi everyone,
Newbie here and hopefully a new owner. I have just come back to the US after working abroad for several years, and obviously I am pretty excited to get a daily driver again (haven't had one for 6 years) I have a 1966 911 that is in storage that needs a little TLC, but not a good option for a daily. I was wondering if you guys can give me a heads up on buying a used 335i coupe. unfortunately I am limited to a certain amount of funding... meaning the 2007 is a more likely option. I was curious on your suggestions for mileage limits (if any). for instance, I am looking at a 2007 with 83k. Is is likely that this will be a maintenance nightmare? Any ideas, info, suggestions, as i am pretty much out of the loop, would be great! Thanks guys here are some example of cars with links for what i am considering; 2007+ 335i Coupe Link 1999-2001 Porsche 911 Link 2003-2005 - 330Ci (perf; silver ZHP) Link |

imho you have to consider the true cost of ownership. There are beautiful Alpina B7's on eBay for 39-40k. Unbelievable, until you need to maintain it. A 335i coupe below 20k is priced there for a reason.
Just search this forum, you'll see 325/330 owners saying car out of warranty, dealership wants 6k for this or that related to valvetronic. We're all human, we feel bad for those folks, but it is what it is. You go into the purchase knowing a $400 rip-off EVAP job on a Nissan is $1800 on a BMW. So my words of wisdom are don't be fooled by a low price on a nice looking used BMW. if you can do all the work yourself, then all bets are off. g/l |

I just bought a 2007 328i coupe for 20k that is in flawless condition and is still under certified pre owned warranty with 50k miles on it.
It has plenty of speed, very reliable, great daily driver - I couldn't be happier. Of the 3 links above, the e92 blows them out of the water- just look at it! |

Your info on the Ebay report said the 335i is a low priced because it was repossessed (sucks for that guy)... so it's up to you really if you want to keep this as a lifer or not. I would look into warranties and such because the 335i may have future HPFP problems and other additional 'hickups' along the way... hopefully a repossession doesn't void any warranties for you

The Porsche is not a bad deal, but I would never buy a Tiptronic P-Car; which the one you linked to is.
In terms of maintenance costs, the Porsche will cost you the most for just routine stuff. Its also not as utilitarian as the other two choices. At 83K miles the 335i is likely due for all kinds of major routine maintenance like control arms and/or control arm bushings, fuel filter, gear oil changes, and on and on. The ZHP E46 is not bad, but expect after after adding 15 to 20K more miles to start to hit the major maintenance items that can get costly. On the 335i another issue is the HPFP failures. You'll only be covered for another 13K miles, then you're on your own. I would probably not consider any 335i that wasn't covered by warranty during the entire time of my ownership. So as a few above have stated, I'd probably look at a lower miles 328i with some warranty left on it. |
